"No taxation without representation" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_taxation_without_representat... Only being taxed by duly elected individuals is a founding principle of the US. The American revolution was literally about that issue.

The problem is the distributions packages are often horrendously out of date. I have stopped using them entirely even for things like Numpy and Scipy which I would really rather use them for (as they take a long time to compile and rely o

What?! it isn't like that at all. I am pretty sure 95% of the programmers on this board use the command line everyday. It isn't "outdated". It is the best tool for a variety of programming related tasks. The average "user" isn't using the c

Let us not forget the Apple Newton Emate 300: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMate_300 Probably the best computer ever designed for children. I used one myself in school from 4th grade through 8th grade when I upgraded to a "real" laptop. T

There is no relationship between the sales calls and the filtering algorithm. That is what the dismissed class action lawsuit was about. All "evidence" people have is purely anecdotal. Verifying a "business" relationship may work but it sti

Spam filtering is hard? You are a programmer, imagine trying to find a way to objectively and fairly filter reviews. Unlike with emails you don't know whose labels to trust. There are good business owners who will only report spam reviews a

I have been experimenting with using what I call a "site specific password munger." Basically it takes a key (random data stored on the computer), a password, and a site identifier (say: "hnews") and produces a password. I have been using i

Bad example. It does tell you something important, namely people no longer live easy walking distance from things which are important to them: job, food, and friends. If you live in a city next to a grocery store and walking distance from y

I don't use virtualenvwrapper either. I generally have more stuff to initialise for my projects than just the virtualenv. I use swork [1] a tool I wrote for managing your shell environment. It basically dumps all of your environment varia

This is a great document. Lots of detail, good recommendations. I recently gave a short lecture on API design and came up with the following "touchpoints" of API design. These are sort of general guidelines and a lot less specific than the

As other people have said, the real story here is how badly GoDaddy handles DMCA requests. Taking down a site for a single image is like using a bazooka on an ant. Yes it will stop the infringement, however it will probably damage some surr

It isn't pedantic just irrelevant. Using multiprocess is an entirely different beast than using threads. All shared values have to explicitly allocated that way in shared memory. Since there is a separate interpreter for each process there
