That's an overly negative interpretation. An app can can be worth a lot more than a cup of coffee to someone, but if there's a free alternative, why would they pay? The business impact is the same under either interpretation of co

I'm happy to go head to head with this link baiter on who knows Javascript better :). I'm not going to take "you might even learn something about Javascript" from someone who says that a simple transpiler is a "blac

Yup. Also I doubt anyone who sets out to "augment the human condition" will: most founder of big cos set out to do something small, & and grew from there when it worked well. If Google started with the goal of being where it i

This type of post often uses the Goldilocks fallacy to appear like it offers advice when it's actually restating the actual problem: the way to achieve Y is with just the right amount of X. "A successful startup is easy: simply bu

Not sure why you're being downvoted. As you said: the list contains great, tough advice, but some of it is wrong as it's personal preference or pompous. "augmenting the human condition" sounds like it'd be better ac

Good round up of things that make me unreasonably annoyed about APIs I've used. ESPECIALLY 200 codes for errors, which means your error handlers won't fire.

I'd guess you're more likely to fail building a product for 'everyone' than for a niche. Therefore I'm not sure it's productive to worry about the size of niches unless you really are only interested in building a huge company (which seems

I used Berkshelf and it works nicely! The only confusion comes when actually deploying via Chef solo and I forget to ensure the cookbooks are actually present. Haven't tried Librarian - only because I saw Berkshelf first and it integrated n

Why? Open Source just means the source is open. There's nothing to say it can't be paid for up front, or even that the binaries are free.

Because a single project in a language has Mac only development instructions the language and ecosystem is Mac only? What leads you to think the discourse devs would have documented x-platform if using node?

Sorry but that's total FUD and has a very obvious agenda. Ruby is preinstalled on most Linux distros, and thus Rails is a gem install away. In production, people only run Ruby on Linux. I, and a heck of a lot of people, do all Ruby or Rai

No way - even if it was the sole performance bottleneck in your application (which as I've commented above is absurd, and a sign you're doing it so very, very wrong). Even if your application was: var i = 100; while(i--) els[i].addEventList

In case anyone reading doesn't realise* - that's not the kind of thing you'd be doing to get a speed up. I can't think of how addEventListener could lead to a 1.001x speedup of an app, let alone a 100x. You don't ever need to create listene

I think > A class makes that simpler because each of the methods are extension points you can override. is a strong argument in favour of classes. They're more extensible even if the author doesn't consider it. However - as soon as your

Reminds me a lot of Nassim Taleb's focus on payoff/cost (expected outcomes) vs probability. If the possible costs are high enough, it makes a lot of sense to take precautions. Hardly rocket science - seat-belts, hand-rails, smoking etc.

I can't see how the compiled code for Type is supposed to work? If you deference a JS function from an object, you lose the context of `this`. So in Ruby.prototype.cut = function () { this.shape(); this.polish(); }; var
