I think the reality is that even parties who take the issue seriously know the solutions are difficult. Making difficult decisions is a great way to get voted out in the next term. An example from the US: During discussions for the recent

My first programming job interview (like 100 years ago) was a group interview. One guy asked me to write string compare in C. Not sure I did it right, but I basically walked the two char* pointers looking for a '0' or a mismatch.

Maybe I’m naive or just dumb, but: isn’t this better? One of the big complaints about modern society is all the isms. Sexism, racism, homophobia (ism). Computers don’t know your skin color, gender, religion, sexual preference, etc. Not s

The problem (I think) is that the Fed has dumped too much money into the system. There are no assets left to buy at reasonable prices. So now investors are buying homes. This is the downside to the current "bailout". I think th

I don't know what will happen with Apple and its app store. There are two parts to the fairness, I think: Apple should be able to get revenue for hosting apps on stores; Not every business that has an app should be forced to pay 30% t

Yeah, I get that. I guess I just mean that the worst pandemic of the last 100 years and (so far) it's maybe 17% deaths over the baseline. That feels kinda low.

If I did the math right, that's (at most) .17% of the population. In a normal year I'd guess we lose 1% of the population. I guess this seems lower than I'd expect?

Holy crap. I want to buy a risc-v computer just to play with this! Do they have a raspberry-pi type device somewhere? (Yes, I'm too lazy to Google for it :)

FWIW, Sheets has been doing this for 5+ years. (Source: I worked on the team when this was implemented -- by someone else.)

I'm not smart enough to know how that works. But I do know that my ISP has not (yet) blocked Youtube or Netflix or whatever.

If Apple never had an App Store, then this wouldn't be a problem, true. There would be no "30% cut for almost nothing ". But would people buy as many iPhones if they were restricted to Apple-only services? Some might. I w

I would argue that, in this case, getting mad at Roku would be like getting mad at my ISP if they blocked Netflix because Netflix didn't pay them extra money. That's a world I hope we never come to (but the ISPs would love it.)

I originally bought Roku because their business (used to be) "selling hardware." I figured I'd pay them money, they'd provide a good product. Now their business is "collecting money from your subscriptions" --

In the examples I saw, I never saw one that did a "join". I guess I'm surprised that they positioned this as a replacement for SQL but gave examples like detecting if something is prime. Might be useful, but I didn't g

This is what I want from Starlink. Drive around the wilderness and still have internet for evenings and emergencies. Glad they're thinking about it (even though it was obvious from the start.)

I never expected that kind of response from HN ;) Just kidding. I do think it's a very fair concern for people to have. Google has that reputation. But honestly, many things on HN are from startups that may go away. And it isn'
