The thing that scares me about the Singularity is that it's such potent kool-aid for tech geeks. I talk to Singularitarians and there's this fire in their eyes like they've been reborn. They become so certain. They remind me of fundamentali

I agree. The future that seems likely to me is one in which most things exist both locally and in the cloud. Syncing and redundancy. Web apps that are also native. It's not "cloud xor desktop". We can have both.

As awesome as this movie might have been, I'm content with _Dune_ remaining a book -- a beautiful, mind-blowing book. Thank god there weren't any other attempts to adapt it for screen.

Well, I ordered a 15" MBP about a month before this year's line came out. It was my first one, so I was unaware of their typical upgrade cycle, macrumors, etc. I was well past the return date and feeling like shit. I called them up and they

Stallman's worldview is so paranoid and cynical. And maybe it's for good reason. Facebook and Apple have been doing evil things. But Facebook and Apple have paid dearly for their behavior, whether they've felt the repercussions yet or not.

I guess I don't see why MS would do this at all if they didn't see it as an eventual Office replacement. Acclimating users to web-based Office apps tangentially benefits Google by validating its approach. So restricting web Office to lightw

An unintrusive page-load timestamp would help us self-limit obsessive reloading to decrease load on the server. Edit: Also, it would give "n minutes ago" a reference point.

And all that somehow implies they won't forage until they forget where they've found food before? Even if they've since struck out at those same locations?

So a forager makes a fruitless (har!) trip to the apple tree, explores elsewhere, and finds food. That slightly deconditions the "revisit" behavior, and slightly conditions the "explore" behavior. Such a planner doesn't seem too difficult f

Couldn't foragers remember food sources perfectly well, but still not exclusively visit them? I don't see how these results necessarily implicate memory. Habit, sure, but not memory.

It seems to me that creative catharsis is a different beast than the rage catharsis of punching a pillow or screaming. Giving one's moods free reign seems a recipe for bad socialisation. But giving creativity free reign seems a requirement

What you're looking at actually is potential. It's like we have to flush all this nonsensical, vile shit out of our unconscious to detox it for big creativity. Or like you can't have the crest of a wave without a trough. I see the stuff y

I don't think that's a safe conclusion to draw. One of the benefits of a corporation is that it can multitask, in some proportion to the number of people involved.
