Good question :) SRE-written system are never or almost never written in Java. However many SRE teams support Java systems. Literally nothing at Google except third-party code (like Linux kernel) is written in straight C. C++ is very com

SRE-SWEs at Google are expected to be able to design and implement the same things that the developers they support are working on. If you are on Blah-SRE you would be expected to be capable of at the very least reading and understanding t

Yeah a lot of people don't understand this distinction. You have your pure SWEs who were hired that way who then were either picked for or switched to SRE-SWE. Then you have people who were recruited into SRE-SWE from the beginning.

Did you read that from WSDOT? WSDOT says this: "How much would it cost to add light rail to the floating bridge? [...] Secondly, it would cost between $150 million and $200 million to construct the 30 additional pontoons and to instal

Well you just made a pretty unfair comparison since you added up to 64000 for all four lanes vs 100000 people /per track/ on a 4-track railway. But I think your assumptions are all pretty optimistic. You wouldn't be able to

That seems like quite an odd conclusion, since converting half that road to an exclusive busway would increase the capacity of the road by a factor of 10.

It would cost that much just to add the pontoons to the bridge. The cost of actually adding more bridge width and the rails thereupon would be more.

Or even tiny, backwards societies. The capital of Uzbekistan has a metro, as does the principal city of Kazakhstan.

Even with perfect software how could cars, self-driven or otherwise, ever compete with rail? A four-track rail system has a per-track throughput of 100000 people per hour. Freeways can get 2000 cars per hour per lane, and an average of 1.

The idea that anyone would ever want to be notified of open wifi networks is bizarre to me. Wherever I go there will be hundreds or thousands of such networks. This might have made sense in 2001 when wifi was novel and rare, but it makes

If you read more than the first inch of that thread, it's clear that this is not a 3rd-party app causing the problem. Indeed, that top post is extremely unhelpful in the tradition of "did you try zapping PRAM?" and other voo

You don't have to tax it. The city doesn't even charge for metered parking spaces on Sundays. Just pricing these would be a huge first step.

SREs are very hard to hire, speaking from experience. At Google SRE directors and VPs will often cherry-pick promising candidates from the mainline SWE hiring pipeline and give them a "hero call" to convert them to SREs. SREs at

Here you go: the minimum wage exists to depress rents. Rents always rise until tenants are making whatever minimal profits will keep them in business. Enacting a minimum wage law takes money from the landlord and gives it to the workers,
