Not everything useful has APIs. The most frustrating example in my life is WhatsApp. It is positively horrible. On IOS? Only way to backup your chats is iCloud. On Android .. only backup option is google drive. On an ipad without a cell pho

As an aside, what would be today's ideal intro to design patterns? Now .. on topic ... I had a roomful of books collected from my youth. I cleaned out my room at my parents house some years ago ... and pretty much everything got chucke

Thx for your comment. I must admit I just learned about FIFO/LIFO for stocks. Seems in the US, the regime is FIFO on stocks unless you declare otherwise .. but you have the option to change it (as I understood from a few hours of readi

I have two questions: 1) If one had used bitcoin as a currency (bought pizza, bubblegum, etc.), are these new "treatments" of cryptocurrency implying one has to report each of these purchases and the tax implication there in? 2) L

I wanted to echo the parent poster. I'm in my 30s and math made no sense as a kid - precisely because the problems were all artificial and uninteresting. I had to fight major math phobia in undergrad. For me personally, the most intere

This post is sort of timely for me to rant and share with the HN community. I'm a hobbyist with FPGAs .. been fooling around with Altera parts for over a year. I finally got my first Xilinx part and wow .. at least a part of the compan

Been done already. Sorry. Google for selfie drone. I think you can buy it from the Apple store. Also, people have done drones inside phone cases too. Not sure if this is a great business idea btw.

The parent comment is actually a good one. I think the spirit of shenzen is different or experimental. We have a lot of regulations in developed countries - many good but some to the point that the president criticizes them in the state of

Looks interesting .. as a SW Eng, I find Udemy very useful for these hw courses. Thanks for the pointer!

Cool project! I had always thought 3D printers needed steppers for more accuracy (as opposed to servos). Is it the 3 arm config of the 3d printer that makes lower accuracy servos work? Curious where you sourced the hw pieces?

My SW eng program did not even hint at these. Is there a good edX or coursera course that goes through more extensive material than the pdf? I'm also curious what tools are used by professionals? Matlab, simulink???

I'm a recent newcomer to the Bay area. What is the Tsunami situation for places like Mountain View? Places like the GooglePlex are pretty close to the Bay. Is there even any real high ground in the area?? If something happens for real,

Haha ... or more than a million!! One thing I like about CES are the frank conversations with engineers. This year, I reached out to a few people. Had a very nice conversation with Karl Guttag (he has an optics blog http://www.kg

Thanks ... this is useful info. I was thinking I'll park the cash in a low-cost market tracking fund. I think markets are overvalued now but better to do this now than waste another decade :/
