I like that it forces users to read the docs to find the functionality. Users don't read the docs, and then they wander around the internet looking for a random blog post with a snippet for one problem, and they don't ever really

I can still vaguely remember when the web was mostly just HTML, images, css, and the occasional plugin content like Flash, Java, and RealPlayer. You could really do a lot of stuff in a tiny package. Now you have to run a pseudo-operating sy

You can always pop it on GitHub with no license. You retain copyright, nobody can do anything with it. Would enable users to report bugs there in the Issues area, or you could make a basic GitHub Pages site, or there's a wiki or discus

Tribal organization is different than hierarchy. Hierarchy is actually fairly recent; forms of it existed in terms of social class structure and rule for a few thousand years, but today's hierarchy was invented by the modern Christian

I'm sure that makes the medicine go down easier, but we're not powerless at all. We choose to have no say. We choose not to run our own campaigns and get grassroots approval. Less than half of us vote. The rest accept the stat

It would arguably be more accurate to compare the actual systems running Postgres and their precompiled binaries. Nearly everything else in a given system running a given version of an application may have an impact on its performance in su

I mean, bounds checking should really be caught by complete test coverage, shouldn't it? Or fuzzing? It doesn't address the more fundamental problem of cryptanalysis attacks, but it would definitely help mitigate the simple mistak

As a consumer I'm sick of seeing these data breaches. The market is not solving this problem. We need legislation to force businesses to do security audits of their products if they collect PII, and fix the bugs in a reasonable time fr

I think it's doable. Teams can keep setup instructions with their repos, and commonly repeated docs can be kept in one place and linked to. Each team can create one page that links to all their setup instructions, and each team manager

What kills me about engineering onboarding is how haphazard it always is. I don't think I've been in a single company where the company has cared about it enough to make sure there was any engineering onboarding process, much le

Food (& drink) is one of the only reasons I continue to live. If I couldn't practice the meditative process of creation that is cooking, or eat delicious foods, or drink delicious drinks, I would seriously consider ending it all. .

It's not unreasonable, but we need some kind of universal knowledge base for tech stuff. Security is just one of many inscrutable topics in tech where you need weeks of research to understand the best practices.

It's very much a use-case and risk driven decision. A company should be using Teleport, which is a lot more than just certificates (but they do use certs). For your personal VPS or GitHub account, nobody is going to go out of their way

I still think about COVID-19 in relation to other common diseases, like STDs. We fear many STDs and readily take protections against them. But most STDs are quite benign and easily treatable compared to COVID-19. In this article, the long-C

I don't know your PR, but the way this is helped in corporate-land is with very small PRs and feature flags. Some maintainers are a lot more of a pain in the ass than others, though.
