Kind of a bizarre title for an article that's really "Our company would like to be more diverse and here's our plan". Regardless of how you feel about diversity goals, not being diverse would hardly seem to make the comp

It was like the September burst of freshmen that never ended? LOL. (Not that I'm disagreeing, exactly.) And before #MeToo, there was "Me too!" :-) Maybe the world is just a better place when almost all of us keep our mouth

Theory has it that real typists actually _do_ use the CAPSLOCK key. They seem to be rather rare, though.

My take: That's what the spacebar is. Originally the backspace key did the inverse. This probably worked a lot more like what we think of as "overwrite" mode on early terminals. The "delete" character is something

Mostly entertainment, but occasionally significant tech announcements or scuttlebutt. Unfortunately, the moderation is mostly unhelpful, I read the raw "new" stream for the good stuff, even though it's noisy.

I'm simply exhausted by it, even though I do pretty well in whiteboard interviews. These days, I stick with places that are happy to see me coming. Desperate even. I'm not getting top dollar, but I have a lot more leverage.

Kudos for _Peopleware_. But otherwise, meh. Can you use strace and wireshark effectively? If not, the rest isn't going to save you.

Thanks for the answer. Back when it happened, I didn't think Bill Clinton's lying about having sex with his intern ought to be actionable, or even something people should care about. Guess I feel the same way about this.

There were a number of candidates, and one was chosen by the head of the Executive branch. The Senate then gets to approve or deny the choice. This is all in the Constitution. If I recall correctly, the bar used to be 60% for approval, by

Summary: They "surrendered" by not declaring that Ernie and Burt were now officially gay, rather than asexual or unstated as they had always been. God things are getting grim.

For me, it was, apparently. I interviewed for quite a variety of positions without a bite. Did pass a reputedly difficult in-person series at a Big 5 employer, and apparently an executive nixed the hire recommendation for this reason. Obv

I'm sorry you went through that. Though I've never attempted, I can relate to a lot of that. Certainly I've spent way too much time thinking about all of this. I do think that everyone should be allowed a humane exit, perha

Exceedingly unlikely events can nonetheless very important if the outcomes are very negative. Just brushing them off with a "that will never happen" is not a rational response.

Assume nothing will change, because it probably won't. Given that, consider the pluses and minuses of staying vs going. If the money is awesome, you might want to stay, at least for a while.

There are very few jobs that allow one to be productive most of the day (and almost invariably they are low-paying). This is indeed shocking to discover in your first jobs after college, etc. Rather than goofing on FB, I'd look for wa

I live in one of the most bike-friendly cities in the US (according to Bicycling magazine). The behavior of bicyclists here, as far as riding safely and in a law-abiding manner, is _far worse_ than other cities I've lived in. Every d

Bicyclists are allowed to terrorize pedestrians with impunity. And indeed, you can easily get a ticket for jaywalking, but you'll never get one for riding a bicycle against traffic, failing to stop at a stop sign, etc.
