It's simple really, many people don't see it as a "free home". It's your home. It's no more free or unfree, earned or unearned than anything else. The home that I grew up in is.. hell, I'd consider it to b

In my mind, the main issue with the pandemic response is that it became an exercise in crowd control rather than a discussion amongst equals. Had the Government at the time said - hey, look, we have two options here - we can lock down for a

FWIW it has been illegal to use lead piping in the UK for at least 50 years now. Of course it's still in older properties.

The second screen flips all the way to the back like a tablet conversion laptop. I suppose you'd have to make sure it was turned off to not be broadcasting your screen to the world.

Yeah, it's odd. I have more time to do those things the more I earn too. Earning more doesn't have to mean working more.

Headshots are pretty vulnerable because no-one really cares if it's fake, as long as it actually looks like you. But there are a number of areas of photography that don't really have to worry about AI because the entire point is c

The issue with this is that it's illegal in a bunch of places. I would love to drive for Uber when I have a bit of free time, but I'd need a licence from my local authority, and taxi insurance which is unrealistically expensive to

My use of the term "socialist" was lazy. I think that the main issue is that it tries to come up with a metric that works across every country which is basically pointless because a lot of them are failed states where income infor

A company, not the same company. I don't think that social mobility can be measured statistically, because it depends on people actually trying. I actually think that the UK does have fairly high social mobility _but_ the vast majority

Old world aristrocratic mindset. It's not just the European Union, the UK is the same. There is a heavy bias towards what works for the incumbents. One of the ways in which this plays out in Britain is that almost everyone is culturall

Heterosexual women definitely respond to the physical attractiveness of other women. So do men on men. All else being equal I'd definitely prefer to work with a more attractive coworker regardless of sex.

It feels like this sort of thing is heavily ideological. A classic "nerd world vs. jock world" thing. But the reality is somewhere in the middle. Basically, if you take the axiom that physical appearance and genetic qualities shou

The term "car-free" seems designed to create engagement via rage bait rather than being any sort of assessment of reality. Obviously people are going to use cars to get to the Olympics. They'll park around the block and get t

I don't think that this is a fair comparison because at some point the nature of the craft actually does change. To give an analogy, a carpenter might be happy with hand tools, happy with machine tools, happy with plywood, and happy wi

Well, I've certainly earned the plumbing system that supplies the water to my house, I pay for it and my labour indirectly supports the building out of that system. WiFi isn't some sort of aether, it is created.

I don't agree that it is insufficient, it's not 100% absolutely fool proof, it doesn't have to be. A kitchen knife isn't foolproof, you could convince someone with a sufficiently low IQ to stab themselves with it.

If you upload your data to a third party without first encrypting it with a key known only to you it is no longer yours. Everything else is just wishful thinking. Like trying to keep a secret whilst only telling one or two friends.

I feel as if the fundamental issue with speed limits is that they often feel arbitrary and infantilizing. If the roads are designed properly then you don't really need them except perhaps as a warning (e.g. the German autobahn isn'

The strange thing is that the same argument is true for seeking in general. Going back from frame 500000 to frame 499999 is in the limiting case as complex as seeking from 1 to 499999, and in most cases far better. I think the forum thread
