Everyone buys that data. It's not a secret, it's not illegal, and they'd be crazy not to.

Technically anyone can do something about it, but that person would be a vigilante and quickly killed, and people like their life more than they hate corruption

I agree. Like, you could build two houses: one out of sticks, the other brick. Depending on who's building it, if they've not built a house out of brick before, it's very easy to make a mistake. Versus someone who's been

I've been doing reliability stuff for near two decades. The one thing I am sure of is there is no way to just engineer your way to reliability. That is to say, no person, no matter how smart, can just invent some whizbang engineering t

You're 28? Dude, go travel the world. Don't spend much money either. Some of the best times of my life were just hanging out with people I met traveling on the cheap. I'd also suggest a little pet project while you travel. 6

I went with my family as a child. I remember it being night, and pouring rain. We got to a road that was completely washed out with like a mini river running through it and a huge gap. A random guy had two boards over the gap and was helpin

So tell your representatives in government to stop putting government funded research into journals. (They won't stop, and the reason why is the same reason why journals have those big profits)

They only have "a hold on research" because academia wants it that way. There's no legal obligation for any research org to publish in journals. They do it voluntarily, for reasons that have nothing to do with furthering scie

Sure about that? Literally everything? There's not a single solitary document that might require receiving somehow other than email? USPS provides a vital service of connecting rural people in America to both package and letter deliver

Paper comes from tree farms. Only illegal logging operations increase deforestation. There are lots of reasons for us to have a postal service other than receiving bills in the mail.

I love the complaints here. They all literally just come down to "I want everything to be free all the time and never pay for anything". As if journals just pay for themselves out of a magical pot of gold. Wanna publish for free?

This really resonates with me. I'm also passionate, and most corporate gigs I've had over 20 years kill my soul. I wish there was a place I could use my skills where they weren't wasted, where I could perform at the top of my

I'm constantly surprised that Western backpackers don't use tumplines. Virtually every culture in the world uses them, if they don't balance the load right on top of their head. It makes everything easier. But I guess it&#x27

We don't need intelligent machines, for the most part. We just need machines that are less shitty. Making an AI seems like a lazy person who doesn't want to work harder to make a less shitty machine.

Seems like an excessive placation for a very minor problem. People post in SI and the Americans convert it, Americans post in US and everyone else converts it. There's no rocket launches failing because a HN comment's units had to

The word 'normal' is relative, so for your country 'normal' is SI (maybe?), and for the US 'normal' is imperial. GP was taking about the US so imperial would be normal. It would be extremely not normal for a Pe

Please don't put security stuff in DNS. DNS isn't secure and DNSSEC is a travesty. Just take the records it gives "under advisement" and confirm it over TLS or another secure transport protocol.
