Keep in mind that at the scale of Reddit entire orgs could exist because their features squeeze 1-2% more user visits, driving more ad clicks, etc etc.

You could also create a photo sharing site in a couple of weeks with a dozen devs. But an actual business like Instagram, that can acquire users, thats profitable is a different story. There are dozens of unprofitable Internet search engine

I have no idea which is more rational. I only mean to say one side gets a lot more oxygen.

And thus discourse is dominated by the 0.001% that throw a fit, which isn't nesc. the most rational position.

Because almost every internet post is performative histrionics. Nobody posts the "meh" position. Which I suspect is the silent majority. The purpose of my post is to collect / measure the "mehs" in upvotes

Startup volatility is higher, yes, but I’m thinking in terms of upside . what’s the upside of giving a FAANG your all vs resting and vesting?

I’m starting to wonder what the upside of working at a big tech company really is. Stability: no (who knows when the next layoffs will be) Base Pay: maybe (probably higher on average) Stock: maybe - but a complete crapshoot Fulfilling work:

Yes, very much so. My challenge is management sees this person as indispensable and not as big of a deal. The person works hard to make themselves indispensable, and really bad at coaching others to do their role. To some degree they see th

My impression is it's the 'one sidedness' of it. Where all of the sudden you're just inundated with lots of praise and love. Whereas a honeymoon phase its gradually increasing and two sided?

Narcissism in the workplace among leaders is fairly common. I recently was let go by a narcissistic boss. Early on I was fairly heavily 'love bombed' and told how great I was. I was told how the team was being built up around me,

Primarily: don't beat yourself up over it. Life is fairly random. You end up with people, problems, and cultures you’re ill fitted for. Or are even outright toxic. All you have to go on is the interview and sketchy Glassdoor reviews to

Yes I’ve learned I thrive when I’m surrounded by hood support and people that truly “see” how I contribute and how I can get better at my super power. I don’t do well when I’m seen as a burden or problem, and “why can’t you just be X”.

I agree. However life is short and after trying half a dozen things over a year, it’s creating a lot of mental health problems for me. It is likely I have failed. I have tremendous empathy for this boss. But I also have to think of my stren

Yes, I helped build the team. Many of the colleagues are my friends and best coworkers from past jobs. That’s what makes leaving so hard. I’m being recruited heavily by other internal teams, which helps my mental state right now.

Well I didn’t spell out the full drama but: 1. It’s been more than a year and I’ve beat myself up, had coaching, and assumed I was the problem 2. This boss / situation is the outlier from almost every other role and I’ve decided to sto

At my company todays staff engs do what yesterdays senior engs did. It’s a game managers play to retain good talent and give them better salaries. On one team I know of almost half the team are now Staff. Things change when you get closer t

Yeah for us it means you have a team tech leadership role. It’s hard to imagine a team where everyone is “leading”. Some people have to be doing. TBH I doubt the actual work people are doing has changed. It’s more about status and salary.

Title inflation is real. 2 years ago I was hired as Staff with pretty high bar to clear. This year I know a team where all the seniors complain they’re not Staff, and now half the team are Staff engs.
