While I agree that companies should share development libraries/SDKs, this will not prevent reverse engineering and if closed source gives reverse engineers another avenue to gain access. BMW likely declined due to possible liability.

I came here to say the same thing about the Trackpoint. That, the ruggedness, and the relative ease of repairs is why I have been using Thinkpads for close to 20 years.
