The sad truth is that there's often a lot of suckers at the table. Spotting the sucker doesn't mean you're not one.

It depends on your queryset, but the incremental (and even the full) indexing is very fast. There are some benchmarks against lucene out there (e.g. http://ri.ms/pts ), but none that I've found against tsearch2.

I'm a huge fan of Sphinx search-- we use a custom version of that to power http://bug.gd and it's quite robust. One of the greatest things going for it is the performance of reindexing-- it's really solid.

I've personally had a lot of fun playing with Twilio. Hint, though: don't decide to pay until you're done using up your demo minutes because those go away when you have a balance. Getting to pick my phone numbers, etc, and have someone else

Best ideas I have here: * Support Seadragon-like zooming into cells which expand into full spreadsheets of their own. You can go to infinite distance deep into the spreadsheets and each spreadsheet chooses a "cell" value to represent it to

? Are we seeing the same UI? I'm not the world's biggest fan of the UI, but I've worked with much worse. It's a very deep web app, so it'd be a shame if startups dismiss a free tool because of a comment like that. Maybe I've just been using

If you like this, you probably want to check out Rightscale's free package: http://www.rightscale.com/ It's not as ajaxy, but RightScale's stuff can do a good bit more than Amazon's EC2 dashboard. Honestly, I was hoping Amazon would creat

One of the reasons is.gd is fast is because it uses sequential URLs for each request, so it doesn't have to do multiple collision tests. tinyurl used to do this eons ago, but stopped because of abuses (actually somewhat NSFW): http://en.wi

Don't forget psyco's JIT which gives some impressive performance gains for a lot of different code. We use it while embedding Python in Counter-Strike Source and it performs admirably.

The last time I saw something like this was way back as a LiveJournal meme. It reappeared two months later as "Pay $5 to see all the people who wanted to hook up with you". That's when they made all their money. Sinister.

"Frequent Troll Statements" might work better than FAQs for some projects. jQuery is hard to use for remote AJAX requests django doesn't even support memcached PERL has the worst support for SOAP of any language out there

No joke: take a look at the LOLpython source for an example of creating a variant language that can compile to Python bytecode. It's one of many methods to create a DSL, though you often don't need access to all of Python in the DSL itself.

I'll have to say I disagree as well-- PHP with a good framework is a better language, hands-down. I don't enjoy coding raw PHP. Almost all of the frameworks are open source, and none of them forbid you from using raw PHP when you need to do

I have to second how well frameworks like CodeIgniter can help developers progress into cleaner code. Those modern tools discourage tightly coupled PHP code and they feel almost like an entirely different language. If you find that you can'
