Sorry, I abbreviated "the projects on Codeplex that are run by Microsoft" as "Codeplex". That's how I understood the statement of the article where he said Codeplex wasn't real open source. If a project is under MS' wings, sure you can subm

Can you try to generate some test data first, and create a mockup of the web interface? A web developer can do that and add some interactivity step by step in relatively little time. When you have a vision of a finished product, it seems li

OSS projects cannot guarantee to merge any patch they receive, that would mean disaster. The difference between Linux and MS Codeplex is that if you submit a patch to the former, it will be discussed in the open and it will be judged on its

Sure, but that should be independent of the TeX template. At least in the few I looked at, you can create sections with any title in any order.

The author focuses on the removal of features from Java, like generics and method overloading (!). His polemics about complex features ("Scala [...] quickly bites your head off") are unnecessary. But from a hacker's point of view, Java is n

You keep hinting at Dancer's inferiority without giving any examples. When I said Dancer is "similar" I was only thinking of Mojolicious::Lite. Feature-wise Dancer and Mojolicious are obviously not in the same league, and are not meant to b

I didn't mean to attack Mojolicious at all. I've never played with it, but it seems very cool. I have used Dancer, and liked it very much, that's all I wanted to say. It's great that you promote your framework, but it doesn't mean that simi

Another vote for Dancer from me. You can start with a tiny one-file script and then slowly use sessions, templates, Plack middleware etc. as you need it. It's very elegant.

I found the article a good read and would have found it somewhat convincing, if it wasn't on a page loaded with everything from a giant photograph to different horizontal bars to all rainbow colors at the bottom, directly under a pink bar.

Any website that you use could store all kinds of data about you without even telling you. Not to mention your ISP, who knows everything! At least Google is making it clear via Google History that they do have the means to do it.

This would make sense for the crowd here, but not for 90% of users whose searches are very fuzzy. So, another vote for "expert mode"...

Even worse is the fact that most of these blog posts just seem to be rehashes of previous blog posts about getting stuff done. Avoid distractions, declutter, pomodoro technique... I don't know how many of these posts I've seen on HN.

Your last statement is most likely not true for Europe. So in the end it comes down to cultural preference. If the majority prefers a certain way of doing things, it makes sense to back it up with legislation to harmonize it and make it saf

Note that books appear more than once on that page, because they can be in multiple categories. That being said, it is entirely plausible that he has read them all in his career.

My only machine is an 11.6" Acer Aspire AS1410. It's a great machine, especially for it's very low price. Plus an external 27" display and a few 2.5" hard disks that's all I need. My DE is Gnome, at home and at work. I live mostly in Emacs

Don't get me wrong, I love this kind of "get it done" policy, but it's not vacation if you work "a couple hours a day". Vacation is when you are able to really forget about work for a while. That being said, I fully agree about the impossib

Exactly. To elaborate a bit for those who never used it in that way: you want to separate your unit tests from your app code. But you still want to give your tests access to non-public methods in order to test them independently. The soluti

Ideally, you would find a regular meditation group that has one or two weekly sessions of maybe 30 minutes and some members with experience who can give you hints. That gives you a commitment to regular practice and a supportive group of pe

What makes you think that? NetworkManager is independent of the UI, it has a command-line client, too. And you can even run the Gnome NM applet in any panel-thingy/dock that implements the right spec, I believe it's EWMH. I have it in stalo

If you look at guile's history up to 2007 or so, it might indeed look like a failure. But since then, development has been taken up again, and progress is amazing. Andy Wingo did a lot of the work and has been blogging about it at wingolog.
