Thanks for your detailed response (and the original offer!). I had understood your proposal just fine, and was wondering about the recruiters' side. I and surely most of us on HN agree with what you wrote on virtual relationships, fairly as

Now that's a generous and tempting offer, but how would it actually work? First, they usually want to know about the work relation you had with the reference. Just inventing something is dangerous and ethically questionable, recruiters or n

Sure, but the vast majority of Indians are not in the IT sector. These salary increases in IT are great for engineers, but they also work against India as an offshoring destination because of the rising costs.

The Times of India reported food inflation last week to be at 15%. That's clearly not sustainable as worker's wages rise significantly slower.

Reason #5: You're not at all sure what exactly the idea of the final product will be. You've got ideas bouncing around in your head and you want to try them to get a feel for what might be a real product.

There is no need, nor even a way, to "micromanage Java's garbage collector". Once the heap size approaches the limit, GC runs and it will free what can be freed. So as long as you design your data structures in a way so that they don't hold

I'm extremely happy with my 11.6" Acer Aspire 1410. There must be newer variants by now. With its one-core Intel CULV it doesn't have much horse power, but then it's dirt cheap. You can get four for the price of a Macbook, which makes you n

Thanks for your additional information. I've been wondering about contracting/consulting since a while, but I'm not sure how to get started here. My mail is in my profile - I'd appreciate if we could exchange a few lines.

This an honest question: why do you have the goal to write "lots of blog posts", as opposed to focusing on quality and/or fun? Regarding your recent Ask HN about monetizing your blog that made you remove the ads, that can't be the reason.

Sure, in practice there's not much of a difference, I'm nitpicking, but it's not exactly the same thing. People might leak the URL unintentionally, for instance by sending the link to others, not knowing that the photo owner doesn't want

The problem is that the random number is static. As Aegan says, anyone allowed to see a photo can leak its URL. It would be better if the URL would depend on the user to whom the picture is served. But that'd be expensive.

It's the other way round: Perl 5 evolution was slow until maybe three years ago, since then it has picked up speed rapidly. 5.12.0 came out five months after 5.10.1. Since then, there are monthly development releases, and 5.13 is already sh
