I normally wouldn't buy a foreclosure for ethical reasons that I'm sure fail to hold water. But if there's a wave following the collapse of Bitcoin, count me in. I have zero sympathy for somebody who loses their shirt specula

Agreed, I'm considering catching a few falling knives when the inevitable crash happens, but that's about it. Looking at the Bitcoin price chart for the past week/month activates the same part of my brain that prevents me tou

Good point! I think that the decision skews away from the bay area (for startup work) if you're particularly skilled. A mediocre developer can make a load of money, relatively speaking, in the bay area, and might get screwed in the mid

Are companies in the Albuquerque/Santa Fe startup scene ever hiring? Is it all word of mouth? New Mexico would be one of my top choices but all I ever see online are government Los Alamos etc. positions for people with advanced hard sc

I really don't, it's possible the NYT found the only (very) attractive women in the 200k town for their article. My comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek.

Right, that's the inner question of my comment, and the answer is, they can't. Hence the "poisoned well" analogy. Unless you're the founder and want access to Googler/FBer/etc. dollars, or you have dreams

You (and the others in this subthread who are splitting financial hairs) are both missing and proving my point pretty hard. Which is that I'm not so money driven to care about doubling my earnings from their already high level, and mor

What a dull truism. I'm not living paycheck to paycheck, I make silly good money for where I live. The fact that I could be making 400k+ total comp in Google Mountain View hell or Facebook Palo Alto hell does nothing for me.

The SV BigCorps have really poisoned the well out there. It's depressing that the majority of good programmers in the bay area are obsessed with the compensation package. Not saying it's the wrong decision, but like you said, it s

What does "indigenous" mean here? Are we talking about nations, as in the Navajo or First Nations? Because that's an entirely different discussion. For everybody else I'd say yes, with mobility comes displacement. The et

Sounds like two have crushing debt. The family that's "struggling" on $100k in KC (really?) wants for "educational opportunities for her high-school-aged son," whatever that means, which somehow translates to "

You could still choose to be insured, wouldn't have to pay if your income is low, and couldn't be denied for a preexisting condition. My point is that you're not being _coerced_.

Argentina isn't even resource-rich, it's just large. Great for ranching, few mineral or energy resources. And it's not exactly a secret that petro states like Venezuela have fallen on hard times in the past decade.

Not if you use aws-cli. But I think the larger issue is that Amazon doesn't provide a low-friction, secure way for applications to access their buckets. A good way would be for each bucket to come with its own access key, or expiring t

That's still better than punishing people for not shelling out to private health insurance companies. If the goal is to give everybody access, we need single payer, the current state of affairs is corrupt to the core.

It's not that so much but that novice users see two ACLs: "Public" and "API Key I use to deploy." So it's very easy to "fix" an access issue by making a bucket public, with the alternative being to gi
