I'm not sure exactly what claim you are referring to. Maybe if you articulate it I can comment properly. My general impression is that the only way to communicate how psychiatry is would be to write a very thick novel with characters w

I just meant that, if you want some kind of psychoanalysis, you don't necessarily need to go the professional route. Medically trained psychoanalysts don't really have a clear advantage over lay analysts in terms of insight.

The notion of "biological root cause" is very controversial. In fact I would say that applying the notion of root cause to a distressed individual is part of the problem with the establishment—the situation is inherently complex,

I'm not sure the original commenter has a clear idea of the distinction between psychotherapy (talking cures) and psychiatry (doctoring). Beyond that there is psychoanalysis (depth psychology) and at the opposite, shallow end, just tal

I checked this out. FLW actually said (in the 30s) "a 10k house for 5K", which translates to a 200k house for 100k today. source: https://www.jstor.org/stable/4633622

Peter Galison's book "Einstein's Clocks, Poincaré's Maps" is based on his personal speculation that it was the late 19th C preoccupation with simultaneity that inspired the theory of relativity. Whether that's

OK, I've found the gross reason why the 2^16 + 2^20 arithmetic works: "The Unicode standard permanently reserves these code point values for UTF-16 encoding of the high and low surrogates, and they will never be assigned a charact

Wait a minute. "A surrogate pair can represent 20 bits, or 2^20 values. A single UTF-16 byte is of course 16 bits, or 2^16 values. 2^20 + 2^16 == 0x110000, which is precisely as many unicode code points as there are (0–0x10FFFF)."

"Surrogate pairs" use two code units (32 bits total) to increase the number of code points that can be represented. It seems a lot more complicated than UTF-8. I have no idea how many code points can actually be represented in the
