The second dev kit isn't coming out for a little while yet, from all reports. I'd get one now if you're wanting to develop for it, but if you're just wanting to experience it, you might as well hold off. The second DK wi

Maybe. As a filmmaker, I'm extremely interested by the Rift, not least because it appears to partially offset the "uncanny valley", at least from early tests. Old games with dodgy character models (Half-Life 2) are much more

Obvious question is obvious, but may also be helpful: have you seen a competent psychotherapist? If the tension is indeed psychosomatic, then treating the psychological cause may be the way to go. Other things that would be worth investigat

It's been a looooong time since I fiddled with the Quake 2 source, but I remember the basics. 1) Yep, it's easiest to compile on Windows, I think. Not sure about Linux, but I recall that the projects were Visual Studio based. 2) I

I'm going to be posting some over the next few days, actually - plus a series over at Charlie Stross's blog talking about the past, present and future of Machinima.

Speaking as someone with a commercial-grade sous-vide bath and variable-temperature PID-controlled pouring kettle sitting on his worktop, a microwave is also a useful gadget even for high-end cookery. It's one of the best ways to cook

From memory (I don't have my copy of "Peopleware" here), there was an large IBM study in the '80s that showed 40 hours as the practical optimum work week. Could be remembering incorrectly, though.

Ah, right, yes. I agree. Crunch time happens. (I'd argue that in rare cases, it can last up to a few weeks - like, say, if you're launching a film you've spent years on.) Months of crunch time, though, is just a Bad Idea. I a

I'm not sure how "work harder than usual in the run-up to a launch" == "rely on a miracle". I suspect we may be used to sufficiently different industries that we're speaking at cross purposes, though.

Death marches are sometimes necessary (or at least useful enough to be worth the inconvenience) even in careers you love, though. Two weeks before the launch of a book/film/whatever, for example, would be a classic time when burni

Well, that's made my mind up. I'm actually about to upgrade my monitor setup, and I've been considering the merits of one large 4k monitor vs 3 27" monitors at 1440p. 4k would be lovely. A 4k 39" monitor with decent
