If you recall back in the Rails 1.x days, it wasn't exactly pleasant to learn -- if only because of the awful documentation. Point being, Rails' first priority is to improve developers' productivity, sanity and happiness - all developers

Joke or not, I have to point out that just because someone's screen resolution is 2560x1600 doesn't mean they have their browser that huge. Personally, my browser is never wider than 1100px. I do usually go as tall as the screen, but on a s

That's exactly what hellbanning does. It enforces the no-feeding-the-trolls rule. You can't keep a conversation alive with a troll if the troll is hellbanned. The site ignores them for you.

The funny part is that your parents probably wont understand the comprehension either. Even if they were likely to, I prefer to leave things the way they are when the only reason to change it is "now my kid brother can do it!"

Fair enough, I'm only saying that 'like English' isn't some kind of holy grail of understandable code. I like code, I can read code, not every line needs to be turned into a sentence.

I just don't think that forcing code to read like English necessarily makes the code any more readable. Sure, if you read it out loud it comes out sounding somewhat like a sentence. That's cool and everything, but when I'm reading code to,

I completely agree. English is English, code is code. I prefer `map`, especially when the function is any more complex than `i * 2`. And suffix conditionals (and the like) are mostly useful to me when it's much shorter and sweeter, but does

Yes exactly. I definitely didn't mean to say I wanted the numbers for profitable as opposed to the '1% chance of being Google'.

Well, it still has to be a good sandwich shop to succeed, and I'd rather invest in a successful sandwich shop than one which will flop. So I'm just curious to know the overall track record of success had by YC funded companies - from a pers

Please enlighten me if I'm missing something obvious here, but wouldn't a pretty interesting number be the percentage of funded companies that are profitable today? I mean, maybe not as a measure of YC's success monetarily, but certainly

Yea sorry I tangent-ed a bit there. Probably because I just think this is a non-issue. It's in the UI in that it's listed in your repositories you have access to, but not on your profile. I don't see what kind of UI change they could make t

The thing is that this is amazingly rare. The handful of times it's happened, the 'victim' most likely just removes the repo (which has always been possible) and that's the end of it. Others might say to their friends on IRC "Hey, can you

This whole thing is a waste of bytes. Simply adding someone to a repo makes it show up in their private repositories list and nowhere else. Annoying? Probably. A big deal? Hardly. (To have it show up anywhere else you have to commit to

Indeed. How does the poster figure Apple got their image? It was pretty bad, their image I mean, in the 90s. It surely couldn't be something crazy like they make great products :)

I normally would agree. But I think this is a unique discussion because the OP is asking why he should use something other than PHP. One might use Ruby because of Rails. So it's not a comparison of PHP and Rails directly, just reinforcing

Modern frameworks and platforms have incorporated and improved a lot of ideas (some would consider) made popular by PHP. Spend some time getting to know Rails for instance and you'll find that none of the problems you just described apply

Eh, I don't really get your question here. Why would you rewrite all your apps with something other than PHP? You wouldn't, of course. Why would you consider a language that wasn't "designed specifically for web scripting"? Because that's

Unfortunately, eating lunch with a group of people every day tends to get very expensive. You either need to be working at a big company with a cafeteria (pass) or for a fancy place like FogCreek, otherwise it's $10-20/day to eat out all th
