People put faith in them because not everyone can hire an army of experts to evaluate all possible investments. S&P supplies their ratings to life insurance companies, pensions funds and even municipal governments. These entities don't

That's because Japanese debt (up to this point) has been primarily financed by its own citizens, life insurance and pension funds. These are more likely to accept sub-AAA rated bonds and support their own government than external investors

I would venture to say that the people who make the laws don't understand technology in the least. Think about your average parent or grandparent who equates AOL (or the Internet Explorer icon) to being "the internet". Now try to get them t

Since Dan mentioned that Amazon Mechanical Turk is being used to do the reviews, as a founder it may be useful to know what the demographics of such users are: http://behind-the-enemy-lines.blogspot.com/2010/03/new-demog...

Those "corporate coffers" you refer to are real investments. Apple is not going to settle for getting a 0% return on the cash it holds. It has to put the money somewhere . It's going to invest it in something , whether it be stocks, bonds

Apple and Google are not foreign corporations, but they own foreign subsidiaries which are responsible for doing business in their respective countries.

Why should they pay tax on that money? It was generated in a foreign country by a foreign corporation and already subjected to foreign taxes. The US didn't expend resources helping them make that money, therefore it doesn't deserve any of i

It says the HTML5 standard is not slated to be complete until 2020. That seems ridiculous. Why so long?

I'm not sure if it's related to their troubles, but their corporate structure has always seemed odd to me. Starting with the whole "co-CEO" role, which seems like an experiment that hasn't quite panned out.

Slightly old data...but I'm sure the trend is still intact: in its 2009 fourth-quarter report released to the public on February 3, 2010, AOL.com reported a total of 4.999 million subscribers in the United States. This reflected a 27% drop

That's ridiculous. Facebook is incredibly innovative as well, even more-so than Twitter. They're solving huge scalability problems that nobody else has encountered before.

Yep, hence the need for intervention by other governments. The private sector will no longer finance their debts (at least not with an interest rate they can afford to pay).

Good for them and I think the best is yet to come. I view Google's work on robotics and automated vehicles as a secret weapon. Should the future consist of semi/fully automated vehicles (a very realistic possibility) Google is going to hav

I think the aversion is that with the growth of the internet, news is becoming (or already has) commoditized. People look at the articles in the NYT and they don't see original journalistic content, they see something they can get from 50 o

This scales well for reads, but not for writes. The single MySQL instance is still handling all writes and (in it's current form) will have to be scaled vertically.

I think this is more a symptom of the low volume and liquidity, not necessarily Forbes's math. There are public stocks trading on the major exchanges that have extremely low volume, but the last trade is still the last trade and as a result

That's the increase in the value of everybody else's stake. Since the stock traded at a higher valuation, they're presuming that increases the value of all the other shares too.

I wonder how it is structured inside. 12,000 people still seems like a lot for that building. Does anybody know how Apple employees are typically structured? Is it offices for everybody? Open spaces with collaborative work spaces?
