The answer is yes, with the unfortunate qualifier that, for at least what we've put together, it won't be soon. The startup has been on pause for most of the last two years due to lack of traction. I don't have the time, mone

Oddly enough W3W fails to go far enough in the direction of being friendly to humans. Hence all the many criticisms of it as a solution.

Yep. I was (and to some extent still am) part of a startup that found a better alternative to W3W. Our solution is the geohash phrase, which you can find a discussion of here: https://www.qalocate.com/solutions/geohashp

And not just that, but rewarding outsized effect sizes so that you reward folks who create the biggest lies with fraudulent stats.

GP here. First time: we chose Timescale over Influx (and a few other competitors). I really liked Timescale. This was ~2.5 years ago and obviously Timescale was much less mature than today. We also sent data to AWS Timestream. We're he

I've seen better communications around company-internal services that have been deprecated and for which a replacement exists that we need to migrate to. Heck, I've seen this a couple of times. We had even tried out Influx a few d

While it’s been 15 years I used to work in telco. Everyday I reminded myself that my software needed to work because someone might need to call 911, or make an equally important call.

I was part of a startup whose entire point was opening up that control. Sadly we failed to gain traction. At least our idea is still around and we may pick it back up if we find the time and energy.

The numbers I am last aware of, while ten years old now, were that Federal funding was roughly 10% of their operating budget, with 90% coming from other sources. This came more or less directly from our NPR station in DC as they talked abou

In Scala this tends to manifest as either tagless final ( https://www.baeldung.com/scala/tagless-final-pattern#1-algeb... ) or free monad (same thing, different encoding).

In terms of cost/benefit, I think it makes way more sense to learn to think in terms of "algebras", and how to create both internal and external DSLs in a host language. I've found it incredibly helpful to have an algebr

I've thought about putting something together on protocols and systems design for years now. I've found that the protocols-first approach to system design, analysis, construction, maintenance, and sustainment has worked really wel

The very small town I grew up in had to do this ten years ago. They formed a co-op and it bought the store. They split the co-op into 100 shares costing a thousand dollars each. I thought about buying one effectively as a donation, but didn

My wife just started a tenure track job in the sciences. This was the very first thing she had to provide in nearly every application.

The most common pattern I've seen, which dovetails with this analysis, is that new features are thus treated as more important as long as there is a path around existing bugs. Bugs gets treated as technical debt, and given as much prio

I worked on a language at one of the big banks that looked very similar. The goal was to have a better-than-SQL language on top of Spark and I think we succeeded at that very well. Unfortunately, politics killed the language and platform.
