In addition, had the OP used disk partitions, a valid partition table (either MBR or GPT) would have been written to disk. Every Linux installer that I've used sets up disk partitions for software RAID volumes. I don't think an in

You could make the exact same argument about Red Hat. Ubuntu's (and by extension Canonical's) value is in its brand and existing customer relationships, neither of which Microsoft would have if they rolled their own distro.

The 2990WX doesn't support registered memory, which currently limits it to 128GB of RAM. Nobody seriously looking at a Xeon 8180M would consider the 2990WX as a suitable alternative. The closest competitor from AMD is the Epyc 7601.

Threadripper may come close in core count, but it cannot use registered memory, which means it's limited to 128 GB of RAM (based on the current maximum UDIMM capacities). That's not competitive in the server space.

Ryzen will send a machine check exception to the OS in the event of a double-bit error. It's up to the OS on how to handle it. This also isn't a Ryzen-specific behavior. All x86 ECC-capable machines work this way.
