As a grad student, I was willing to take boutique courses from any of the PLT folk in the larger group (including Bjarne & Gaby). Most of the students were terrified of Bjarne, but I'd sit front-and-center and pepper him with quest

My gut feeling is that the combination of typestates and stackless coroutines (really: CSP) would make for a kick-ass driver design. It's pretty solid for the toys I've designed for OpenGLES-2-class drivers. My gut feeling is that

While I'm certainly not proud of these places, what makes you think wealth & power -- or the loss of them -- correlates with being "nice"? Countries act like kids, and it's the kid with the worst home that is the wor

This is a Trolley Car problem: you're going to kill someone : do you flip the switch to kill the baby, or let the Trolley plow through the crowd of people? Now you know why Philosophy professors teach this problem in Philosophy 101.

Without naming a place, a friend of mine checked out a copy of the parliamentary proceedings (from the UK) of the House of Lords from the early 19th c. They were the only one to have ever checked any of these books out. Mostly boring, but

I tried to convince a group that: 1. Hot air balloons get their lift from hot air; and, 2. Dirigibles can get their lift from hydrogen; thus, 3. Hot hydrogen dirigible? Blah blah blah ... exploding dirigibles ... blah blah blah. The lifting

Right!? I just naturally assumed that everyone could picture & model 3d shapes in their visual space (like AR), until I was in college. I used to design machines & parts "in front of me" and then build them. I think it

Off the top of my head "flying vehicles" and "body preservation" are well-attested in many other cultures (Ancient Egypt; Mayans) that I'm 100% certain had neither. You are for sure reading too much into this. >

Smoking is attested both archeologically, and historiographically dating back something like 7000 years in the old world. People have been smoking opium & marijuana in the middle east for probably 2000 years. Smoking culture in India go

I'd argue that GPL-licensed works should remain "authorial", and that each commit generates a new derivative object and, thus, a new copyright. In that sense, the "old code" goes into the public domain in ~28 years,

First, I'm restricting this to the US! I replied elsewhere, but will reply here, as well. I think there should be two "schedules": 1. A private schedule, which is tax-free which terminates at 28 years or upon any (or all?) of

I haven't thought about patents. But, for copyrights, I think there should be two "schedules": 1. A fixed original-author schedule which is 28 years, tax free; and, 2. A "work for hire" schedule which is 70+ years,

Geoist taxes are always problematic for this reason. I suspect that if the tax valuation is phased in slowly it'd have a good trade-off.

I like this. We should do the same for copyright: the owner of the thing (patent; trademark; copyright) declares a value, then they pay a tax on the value; anyone else can “pay the balance” to buy off the monopoly.

Hm. Okay … I consider things like “dynamic programming, memoization, and [graph] traversal” to be basic skills of a systems programmer. I didn’t realize people didn’t look for those skills to weed out the flerbs.
