From what I can tell the "learning" phase is just an extended version of programming your thermostat. I'm curious how this is any different than a traditional thermostat?

As universities offer more and more curriculum online, would you hire someone who had self taught himself through a CS degree? Or would you want to see the diploma?

Are you sure this is the reason? Our company uses Microsoft OS and office tools across the board. But when it comes to development most of our work is done in linux. A version of Visual Studio for Mac would make no difference.

Thanks for the post! The way I solved this problem in the past was to rotate one of my monitors 180 degrees. People always make comments when they walk into my cube for the first time, but you sure can fit a lot of txt on the screen. Maybe

I would agree. The company I work for gives a 25% boost in pay just for relocating to the SV branch from other branches. This is merely a cost of living bump for the exact same job title.
