Neither of those two examples give away their core software for free though, which sounds like what Simperium are going to do. I'm absolutely not saying it can't work, and kudos to Simperium for taking this approach, it looks like there is

Out of interest, is there any research to back the idea of selling your product at the same time as giving it away for free ultimately results in higher sales? A trade-off between exposure and "lost" sales I guess?

Of course, one option would be for Germany not to give Greece any money, and then Greece couldn't spend the money that it doesn't have as it is/was.

Have you taken a look at the deferred rendering and/or Scroller options for DataTables ( http://tinyurl.com/cr5usea and http://datatables.net/extras/scroller/ )? These can provide a significant speed increase - depending on your data so

This is really nice work! The grid looks superb and the inline editing display is really slick.

DataTables ( http://datatables.net ) has some overlapping functionality, some of which is provided by plug-ins. For example KeyTable + Editor: http://editor.datatables.net/tutorials/keytable . *Disclaimer - I am the author of DataTables

Great method! I had ideas about doing something similar (although this technique is rather more advanced than mine) a while back, about being able to show messages based on character read from an HTML page. I wrote a little script for it:

Agreed! Saying no to a new client who contacts you is not too difficult (although depending on circumstances a pile of bank notes being waved at you can influence the decision...) - but it is much harder, at least I find, to say no to exist

I must admit my big difficultly when trying to get this balance right is saying no to client work in order to have time to develop the product. It can be incredibly hard to say no to a few $ when you have no guaranteed income.

One thing that is completely missing (unless I'm being daft) is the sampling method for gathering data. How many people responded to give the results. Possibly fairly quite a low since for some states there appears to be no data gathered at

Replying to myself - but thinking about it further, there is something a little ironic about the result of removing $.browser in that testing for certain behaviour can in fact increase code size in libraries. For example testing the renderi

I must admit that I'm surprised $.browser is going to disappear in 1.9, not because removing it is a bad thing, but because of the number of scripts that is going to break. Current jQuery UI, Bootstrap etc all use $.browser. There is presum

> In the BBC story, Oster says the train could be ready in less than 10 years. Haha! No chance. We might not even see the new link between London and Birmingham (HS2) before 2035, never mind one to New York!

I would doubt it. Quickly scanning the front page doesn't exactly inspire confidence that the application is either stable or would actually work. For example: the only link that works in the nab bar is the "login" link. The demo link resul

Heh - it is not without its drawbacks! The Google Checkout icon didn't hit that problem, as they used tables, but certainly in this case I don't see how that could be achieved quite so readily.

Speed and size - if you you were using images, you are going to incur an extra HTTP request, while using this method everything needed to draw the logo is already at the client-side. In terms of size, the HTML and CSS needed to draw the log

I'd suggest more that the interviewer felt threatened rather than envy. From their point of view, they would have someone smarter than them working under them, who might show them up to senior management or displace their current position i

For Javascript I use JSDoc3 with a custom template which results in documentation such as this: http://datatables.net/docs/DataTables/1.9.0/ . Not sure how beautiful one could call it, but I get what I want out of it!

Thanks for the feedback - I really appreciate it. I'm currently in the middle of developing v1.9 of DataTables and backwards compatibility is key for me here. v2 is a good way off, and I'm certainly not committed to removing the hungarian n

I'd completely agree. However, imagine the next news item is that Spotify increases their prices 5 fold, to pay out more to the artists. The comments would be full of "there is no way it should cost that much" and "I'm not paying that"!
