I have one of these (and donated one). It's a pretty amazing ball. There's another charity called Alive & Kicking[1] that makes more traditional balls. The main advantages are that the balls are actually made in Africa, giving people jo

For clothing, I learned a nice little trick. Go to your closet and turn all of your hangers around backwards, so that the tip of the hook is facing you. Go do it now. Also, add a reminder in your calendar for one year from now. Now, each ti

Arrays are useful when order matters. Traditionally, in SQL, you would have to have an `order` field, which takes a bit of overhead to keep correctly ordered. For example, if you wanted to swap two items, you'd need a transaction around it

Unfortunately, physics dictates this setup. To get to a top floor generator (which is generally necessary for ventilation), you have to pump from the bottom. For most buildings, that means from the basement, where the fuel tanks are placed

The elevator equipment is also in the basement, which is flooded with sea water and diesel fuel. Even if they had power, there's no running them until everything is cleaned up.[1] [1] http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4720894

So, you agree that no one expected Manhattan to lose power. No one expected that in 2003 during the blackouts, either. And in that case, Peer1 was able to keep the servers running without disruption. This was a monster of a storm, with unpr

I'm no longer with the company, so I may be out of date, but the consensus was that it was just too expensive to support licensed products if it weren't necessary. The thing that people don't take into account is that there are an endless n

Just to be clear, WebPutty is not gone. It's operational for another few months on Fog Creek's dime[1]. After that (or now, if you'd like) you can easily host it yourself on App Engine, probably for free, now that it's open source[2]. [1]

How so? This storm was a whopper. To the point that buoys were reporting waves 5 times taller than anything on record. Historically, Manhattan has been a fine place for a data center. Moreover, Peer1 survived the 2003 blackout, the only oth

Aside from the other points here, Dropbox is much more expensive to get to the amount of storage most photogs have. On top of that, you have to either alter your workflow to be entirely within the Dropbox folder or have a duplicate set, w

We're both photogs who use Windows. It was a combination of being more familiar with this platform and being a bit myopic about our target audience, since we figured we were a part of it.

Regarding the video, we were instructed not to spend too much time on it. As it was, we spent too much time on it. Making a great video is difficult, and ours was there just to meet the requirements of the application. Since we got the inte

Looking at my Kindle Keyboard, I have one book (Moonwalking with Einstein) that is ragged-right and another (On Intelligence) that is full justified. Perhaps it's the formatting of the e-book and not the device?

Idiots do say stupid things. But just shrugging it off as Yet Another Idiot does not improve the situation. People getting their "feathers all ruffled" is how we can show that this sort of behavior is not acceptable and should not be suppor

I believe it is blatant lying because they went out of their way to prevent their customers from having those features, even though they were readily available on other platforms through their established partner. It's also rather dishonest
