You can still buy a brand new Toyota Land Cruiser J70 in 2021. Even though it will be newer than the iPhone 12, it won't spy on you -- because it was designed in 1984. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Land_Cru

I would find ffmpeg much easier to work with if it would take in a file with spelled-out, nested instructions (say JSON or YAML, like a CI tool) instead of a long list of order-sensitive, cryptic arguments. I know there are wrapper librarie

Just in case someone didn't know this and finds it useful: the system Files app on iOS can also scan documents to PDF, including perspective correction. I believe the Notes app can do that too.

Given an Android phone or tablet, you can get sticky NFC tags and make the device play the corresponding stream when it touches one. Stick them to photos with the radio station logo, and you’ve got a record player / Toniebox. The tabl

Tracking someone in real life is not illegal. You can sell someone a physical device that makes a lot of noise and then sit outside their home and write down each time they use it. Nobody would be able to stop you.

You can force all port 53 traffic to your server. There is nothing you can do about devices/apps that really want to use their own servers (DNS over HTTPS, pinned certificate), short of keeping them offline.

The actual 1x1 pixel is a leftover from the previous generation tracking tools, and even the page you liked to recommends _against_ using that method because it can’t spy on users enough. Here we are talking about a tracking _script_ embedd

I've been running a work Linux virtual machine (or a few of them) on a MacBook. Best of both worlds really -- I don't have to worry about running Linux on the hardware or running dev tools on macOS. As a bonus, a full system backu

The minor lesson here: be careful operating heavy machinery with no cost limits -- or hire someone who knows what they're doing to do it for you. The major lesson: audit your expenses every month (or hire someone to do it for you). The

The power of Django (imho) is in how you can define data models only once, and out of them get excellent database migrations, database operations, form validation, API serialization/deserialization, and an admin interface. Is there any

You can add the Fujitsu Esprimo Q910/Q920 to the list of alternatives. There are many cheap options on eBay. I also run Proxmox, with a few LXC containers and full KVM virtual machines, including a reverse proxy that routes traffic to

Just one more step missing for a fully remote docker setup: have you ever tried combining this with a sshfs mount so you can also develop an app running in a remote container?

Skype is also a familiar option for many non-technical folks. It has syncing, a web client and optional one-to-one encrypted chats. It also uses Microsoft accounts, which many already have because of Windows integration.

Aren’t all smart TVs dumb if you don’t connect them to the internet? I wouldn’t be surprised if manufacturers start selling TVs that need to be activated online before first use, but I don’t know of any that do that already.
