I think the approach of "have more self control" is doomed to fail. We have a social media addiction problem because there are literally teams of scientests using machine learning, A/B testing, and other techniques to get you

There are many aspects of our business that are in the cloud today that I am confident do not have scaling challenges, would be just fine running out of a single VPS. We aren't going to suddenly have 20x employees one day, a lot of our

My favorite is from Amazon, when selling Prime. "We are sorry to hear that you do not want FREE two day shipping." It really agitates me. I wish it didn't bother me so much but it cuts pretty deep sometimes.

Meh. I remember we used to use Yelp to find the best restaurants in a city. It worked incredibly well. It doesn't anymore, but Google maps is not better. For example, I tried to use Google maps to find good buffalo wings in Brooklyn. B

KeyChain is not an open standard and is not easily interoperable with other strategies or products. You shouldn't build best practice out of a single company's walled garden.

Would you say the same thing if Cloudflare and several ISPs all unilaterally decided to stop hosting democratic party websites? The line isn't as clear when you generalize the action.

Well, there's replicating the experiment and then there's challenging the conclusion. Those are two separate ideas, and are actually fairly independent.

Ads perform better when they stand out. It's easier to stand out by being terrible in some visible and unique way than by being excellent in some visible and unique way.

An acre is 40,000 square feet. So 25x20 means you get one tree every 9 feet in both directions. That's pretty dense for a large tree.

Are you completely sure there isn't some culture reason they are so good at running? There are so many variables at play beyond our modern understanding. It's just a topic we really don't have a good grasp of, as is the case

As a reliability engineer I disagree. It's nice to know that your code has few antipatterns in it by design. "Blunt knives" is a really bad way to think about it. You have plenty of very sharp knife, and they are easy to use

The virtual piece of it would ruin the last second regret. The regret comes from the realization that you've crossed through a door with no return. Can't ever get that in VR unless somehow the subject does not realize it's fa

We wrote a program where atomicity was mission critical, and tested the hell out of power loss recovery. I can confirm experimentally that the rename trick is not good enough. It was nearly good enough on Linux. Corruption was very rare, bu

Until it's fully live, Facebook can change the terms, contract, code, strategy, etc. however they want. Until they have an actually decentralized system humming away, it's all us trusting Facebook to do what they promise.
