Many many people besides a public figure like Stallman have written a blog or participated in a newsgroup. -- Let's just see what can be done without Facebook: You (pessimizer) have listed your email address pessimizer@xxxxxx . You have

I just don't see what the big deal is... The set of information people publish on their own about themselves (like blogs) is almost exactly the same as the set of information they disclose via Facebook. Anyone can datamine people's blogs fo

This form of exploratory computing has existed for a while in CPU instruction scheduling. Branch Prediction etc. is widely used. The big trade off has to be power consumption. If you diminish accuracy, fine. But if your handset dies because

On a related note, I was astonished how many different states water (H20) can be in. Many more than just solid, liquid, gas. . See http://www.lsbu.ac.uk/water/phase.html My ice goes up to ice-eleven (XI) ?

I'm not poo-pooing improving the ability get 10x speedups... that'd be awesome in many contexts. Rather I think a lot of even "embarrassingly parallel" problems have lots of micro-sequential code within. With your example there are mico-s

I think we would just have run into Amdahl's Law earlier. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amdahl%27s_law . Basically you don't get a free pass for parallelising things. . If 90% of a task is parallelizable then the maximum speedup you can

Great list, I'll add my suggestion. I really like Divvy. Easy to partition windows on your screen http://mizage.com/#windivvy I use it when transcribing notes from a browser, or impromptu dashboards

It is a little harsh on me to say that I "missed the point". I was not short of understanding of the historical significance of Latin. I led with the fact that I studied Latin for 6 years. During this time all your reasons were expounded a

Who here studied Latin? Well I did Latin for 6 years in High School (Sydney Boys fyi). I find this title "Coding - the new Latin" as a bizarre way of inducing people to learn to code. Latin is dead. Very dead. Back in my day Latin was bille

Impressive as a home build. They banned colour lasers in Austrailia circa 2000. At the millennium party Mobile Home they used a commercial laser to project whole Tom and Jerry snippets onto the cliff face of North Bondi. The ban came in sho

A friend of mine was a corporate insurer. Whenever a large firm like dropbox made a clanger and got sued, the insurers would work out how much negligence there was involved. The insurers discussed the issue with the company and said "you we

I think in European dates, and I think this numbering is fine. ISO 2014: YYYY-MM-DD format always seemed a nice compromise, so just think of 1 being the first non-year portion.

I am dual Oz / British. I grew up under AV in NSW, with Senate being full PR. I voted NO because FPTP seems good enough. I don't miss Australia's monster ballot papers. Most of the theoretical advantages of AV , PR dont happen in practice.

Your example is a tad too simplistic. Literally everyone would just write z = x + y; inline Why parameterize needlessly? If you're saying that list comprehensions are clearer in functional form, I would suggest a more appropriate comparison
