It's an interesting question: what determines how many messages a gay guy receives? What type of guys are most likely to send the initial message? In the first four months I was on OKCupid, I got unsolicited messages from about 115 guys.

I've toyed with the idea of marketing a police-forensics version, but honestly, direct mail never came to mind. Is there a specific reason you suggest direct mail for advertising to police departments?

The first product sale is euphoric and a bit magical. "Holy cow, somebody actually paid me for something I built!" I just had my first sale of my software this past weekend, and it was fantastic: http://www.keacher.com/1060/how-i-got-to-my

Graeme Obree (the subject of this article) is a great hacker. No, not in the software sense, but most definitely in the cycling world. Consider: - At least twice he produced advances so innovative that they were subsequently banned (his "

Indeed, I've had similar poor results from SU's paid discovery. On the other hand, I've had great traffic from SU's organic stumbles. Too bad I can't really control those.

This looks pretty cool. It would be a great companion to http://placehold.it (which fills a similar role for images).

What's their lifetime value? Is it still negative? At the very least, this might be a sign that you should change your pricing structure so that future customers don't end up in that same unprofitable category. You might also just consider

Indeed, signalling concerns apply to every round, but perhaps they are more important for the seed-to-A transition than for later rounds. It seems that most companies that raise a seed round (and survive) go on to raise a series A before an

Deconvolution is easy. The main difficulty is estimating the blur kernel in a so-called "blind" manner. That's the advance being shown off by Adobe.

FocusMagic handles only focus blur or linear motion blur, and either way, it requires a high level of user interaction to direct the deblurring. In effect, it is "non-blind" deconvolution. The Adobe approach, on the other hand, handles com

Indeed, I gave it a go with a blind deconvolution product for the consumer market. In the end, I decided to kill it. Here's my blog post describing why I pulled the plug: http://www.keacher.com/?p=872

Seems similar to http://webputty.net , though WebPutty has CSS hosting, better integration with existing sites, and compatibility with SCSS. That aside, what problem do you see this as solving? As in, why would somebody learning CSS by "

In terms of least revenue, that would probably be my webcomic, http://www.zoitz.com/ , which has had millions of views but for which the only revenue has come from a small textbook licensing deal. In terms of greatest loss, that would be

The one time that I've found a practical application for WebP was when a client needed to fit a roughly 1-megapixel photograph in less than 5 kbytes of storage space. JPEG starts falling off a cliff in terms of image quality once you push

No, Stackoverflow makes hackers more efficient. Besides, if you want the "old" way, don't post your question; instead, just search through SO until you find where somebody else has already asked almost the same thing.

No, I don't worry, mainly for two reasons: First, it's extremely difficult to predict how a company, product, or idea will evolve. What seems insignificant now might be world-changing in the future. Second, the universe will die a heat dea

Thanks for the input. Figuring out what to charge, and on what terms, has been a struggle. To follow up, in your opinion would it need to be a stand-alone tool and/or Photoshop plugin, like FocusMagic, or is a web-based solution viable?

I know you mentioned not liking Amazon for the sign-up step, but in practice I haven't noticed much of a fall-off because of it. I use Amazon's Flexible Payments Service for taking small payments (<$2), and I've been pretty happy. Abou

I'm fond of my TI-89, but I keep it around for nostalgia more than anything else. (Serial number 750, manufactured July 1998, purchased new. Ah, memories.) When it breaks, I won't be replacing it. When I do use it, it tends to be for sim
