Hitting a child is probably counter-productive. Scolding it all the time is definitely counter-productive. Scolding it in extreme situations is quite effective in my experience; this is what I was referring to.

Don't forget that the CO2 footprint of these things is immense. Though take growth away and things will be come zero-sum; people will try to take things from each other rather than from growth, and will find petty reasons for conflict
