They won't be able to test exhaustively every failure mode that could lead to such issues. That's why canaries are easier and more "economical" to implement and gives better value per unit effort.

Canary offers more bang for the buck, and is much easier to set up. So I kind of disagree.

Testing is never enough. In fact, it won't catch 99% of issues by the virtue of them often testing happy paths only, or that they test what humans can think of, and by no means they are exhaustive. A robust canarying mechanism is the o

Everytime i look into such catastrophic issues, it always boils down to lack of robust canarying mechanisms. They have enough client base that they can even run an A/B test on the whole binary level, but no.

Rolling out updates in an A/B test slowly is the only way to reduce the occurrence of such issues _significantly_. There's no other way, literally, nothing.

+1. When I talk it is to add value or present a different view, or making a prediction of how something will likely turn out and why. It's not about fear at all. In fact, because of what I say, it is often the opposite of fear.

Precisely. Assuming every other actor will behave rationally has proven wrong over and over through out the history.

I have been following your work with much joy - so kudos to you. I have also some dream that one day we will see something like rocksdb/lsm backing postgres.

Postgres storage engines are not mature yet to allow higher through put for insert heavy scenarios (That are not necessarily analytics focused). They also don't have a way to offload storage to cheaper storage. Orioledb, pg_analytics,

Amjad's way of delivering bad news was very humane, and to the point. The post-separation benefits are also pretty good. He did a very good job. https://twitter.com/amasad/status/1791155645091283311

The vehicle had 6 recalls, many things I don't remember. Check reddit for a better source. This made me curious about longer term problems once the car is out of warranty. Otherwise recalls so far seem to fix most issues permanently.

Cx90 has phev, which is kind of an EV if you squint hard! The first year of this model was problematic so please do some research on reddit. mhev seems ok. CX50 is also one that I had my eyes on.

As far as i can tell, california forest management essentially ended up suppressing "good fires", and didn't do enough of controlled burns, which ended up accumulating a lot of fuel to cause large fires.
