Miley Cyrus is currently winning, and probably will win. This isn't the NSA hacking Time or any other conspiracy. Miley Cyrus is more popular than Edward Snowden, and more people are likely to want Miley Cyrus to win than Edward Snowde

RMS just has a workflow, developed probably sometime in the late 80's and nearly only involving emacs. He also uses a Lemote Yeeloong (which can barely run ancient versions of IceCat), and runs it in a tty most of the time with just em

Would a hospital staffed only by highly skilled surgeons constantly performing unassisted emergency surgery economically out-compete a hospital with nurses and receptionists?

I generally agree that gaining a wider perspective is valuable, but it's not clear that HN is the best way to do that, and the OP outlines a number of reasons which make sense to me why it would be a bad way to do that. At the least, H

I think everything you've said in your comment is correct, but when did the alternatives become "be a mindless drone" and "be a mindless drone who reads hacker news?"

I think if you believe people should go to prisons, your morality is dictated by the state. If you find that offensive, maybe you should make an effort to clear your cached thoughts[0], and recompute everything you think about prisons. If y

That's an optimistic way of looking at it. The pessimistic way is that people eventually see enough authority figures endorsing new stances that they change their own stance. Obviously nobody explicitly thinks their morality is dictate

Yes. Most humans never progress past the command-ethics morality that characterizes Kohlberg's second stage (of three) of moral development. This isn't correlated with general intelligence. Most of the intelligent people you know

TorGuard isn't a Tor provider. They're a VPN provider that specializes in BitTorrent. This is a common enough misconception that I'm surprised the Tor Project hasn't enforced their trademark.

Being a developer is a very valuable skill. Presumably, working for eight hours as a developer can pay for a number of volunteering efforts, so it's strictly more valuable. If a charitable organization needed some software written, vol

If someone sold bad shit on the silk road, they'd lose all of their rep and stop making money. On the original silk road, it cost a very large amount to get a vendor account. So if you decided to start selling bad shit, you'd have

IIRC, the biggest drug on the Silk Road was marijuana, which was probably not cartel grown. There are plenty of places in the US where it's effectively legal to grow marijuana, and the growers who have a legal enterprise almost certain

Seems like a market sector ripe for disruption! All those pirates have mobile phones, and soon they'll have smartphones -- what's going to be the Uber for piracy? As a huge plus, visa law is fantastic in Somalia. Great place t

I don't think that most feminists hate men. Most people who identify as feminists are pretty liberal, Hillary-Clinton-esque feminists, or "fun"-feminists of the "Pole dancing is empowering!" sort. Of the feminists t
