As someone who drove many miles during the early period of lockdowns in 2020, but only to get out of the house, never once in contact with anyone, I crumbled inside every time I heard the news report metrics from mobile devices of miles dri

I also tend to mistrust social sciences studies, and I'd agree that they could be any of those things. Or, the person could be an otherwise perfectly well-kempt child of alcoholics, the victim of assault, or anything else divergent fr

I really don't think other people's existence creates your emotional response. As an adult, you do. Discrimination against people for unalterable characteristics can affect theirs in pretty obviously damaging ways.

Worth the stretch, especially since it is paywalled, but the "Why?" adds dimension. Is it ok? No. Check. Does it happen anyway? Apparently yes. I think it raises interesting questions about human nature and society.

Describing the three scenarios in parallel is a rhetorical technique to raise the question of why some are protected by law and custom, and some are not, in roughly similar outcomes. The article links to several studies purporting to show t

There are many other jurisdictions the story could be relevant to but isn't. "Police" is not (yet) a global institution. Also: Editorializing? It's literally in the first sentence of the article.

I think the environment is the confounding factor rather than programmer working life-span. An OS is just so much simpler than dynamically constrained energetic replicators in an always and everywhere collapsing wave function.
