Thanks for the info. That doesn't sound good - one major reason for considering moving to Kubernetes was for the high availability.

I switched to Postmark to SES recently. Having a great time so far and very easy to set up webhooks, see sending history etc. Much easier than SES. They'll give you $75 credit to get started too.

Did you experience the downtime issues with DigitalOcean managed Kubernetes that the author also experienced? I'm also considering DOKS so would be great to know!

I don't think this is a pricing increase? It's just their pricing for Stripe Billing. It's been 0.5% since at least 2018 which is when I started using it. I'm not sure why this has suddenly exploded on HN.

I also noticed this with their managed databases product and was the main reason why I went with AWS RDS - they don't have availability zones so if they have a data centre issue, all your database instances including your standby nodes

Thanks for mentioning Render, I had not heard of them. I've been evaluating options over the last few months as we may outgrow Dokku hosted on DigitalOcean soon (both of which have been very reliable and a delight to work with). Render

The first retina iPad (iPad 3) was a great example of this. In hindsight, most people agree that it was rushed out without a powerful enough chipset to handle the higher res screen and so it aged quite badly. It was replaced by the iPad 4 o

One thing I would definitely add is never use Stripe Connect and Stripe Billing within the same Stripe account. Make sure you create a separate one. Stripe does not have any tools to separate the data once mingled and it makes accounting a

What a brilliant real world example with great advice (not sarcastic) - thanks for sharing. I’ve often wondered what codebases are really like at hot startups so this was fascinating to read.

Very common in the car industry, where engine power is often limited by the ECU chip only. I know the BMW Minis did this when they were first launched (the One and the Cooper had the same engine mechanically, just with a different ECU flash

I believe so (speaking as a React developer for the last few years). I'm sure a few people at Apple have looked longingly at React Native and the concepts there.

I don't know about that. React was the cool thing 5 years ago, and 5 years later it's still the cool thing judging by how many jobs are out there for React and React Native developers.

If it helps at all, I found that buying a dedicated IP for SES helped our deliverability enormously.

I agree with this. As a developer there’s no way I’m going to risk my system by upgrading as soon as a major update is released. Wait until 10.x.1 at least. Catalina seems particularly bad from what I’ve heard from colleagues, but it’s a se

If you're a decent programmer, then use those strengths. As you say, web designers are ten a penny now and there are even drag-and-drop website builders like Squarespace and Wix. You need to go upmarket in terms of delivering value and

Will VW be willing to sacrifice solid profits from its ICE cars for likely lower initial profits for electric cars, similar to how Apple cannibalized its iPod line for the iPhone? I don’t know enough about German management culture but I ha

I can’t speak for others, but personally I wouldn’t entertain the purchase of a VW or anything from the VW Group after the dieselgate fiasco - regardless of whether it’s electric or not.

This is basically like DNS for latitude/longitude coordinates. Pretty cool if you think how revolutionary DNS was in making the web much more accessible. If this has the same impact then it will be spectacularly successful. Although it
