Wondered why my site was spotty. I love Namecheap as a registrar, but I'm questioning now whether I should be using them as my DNS provider. Any suggestions?

That's a really nice HCI idea. Maybe not too discoverable but very very easy to "trigger" when you want it.

Yes, I thought that was one of the touted benefits of moving to the new API.

Same here. I wonder why Chrome on Windows doesn't work. Fortunately I'd seen this story on my Ubuntu box before leaving home, so I wasn't totally out of the loop.

Hear, hear. I can't tell you the number of times I've drafted a comment on HN, revised it a couple of times, and think cancelled before posting. That wouldn't have happened in my twenties.

Especially since the linked site is starting to hit resource limits. I had to refresh a few times before it would load. Here's the youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E43-CfukEgs

I wish more university students had this kind of attitude. Instead of "Let's take out the maximum amount of loans so I can get a new iPhone!" Well done.

I think this is really important. Right now I'm not sure there are any brands where every SKU is good. Within each brand, there seems to be a lot of variability in quality from model to model.

I strongly disagree. I've been homebrewing all-grain batches for about six years. My typical brewday takes about nine hours and involves four distinct vessels. There's a lot of heavy lifting and a lot of cleaning. This machine wou

That's two programming languages. Not all languages have a nice ISO-8601 parser built-in. Human-readable is a slight advantage, agreed.

I had some problem with my mailgun-sent emails being marked as spam. But I was only using the free plan, since I only send 25 mails a week or so. I didn't have any problems with DKIM, though, or SPF. My problem was having to use a shar

It does! I guess I meant "I wonder if there's a way to take this thing you're already tracking and use it as a per-subreddit voting gate."

This is a really interesting idea. I wonder if there were a way to track per-reddit karma, and only allow redditors to vote in a certain subreddit once their karma reaches a threshold or account age. (Just like HN, but per-subreddit.)

I do agree with that. I don't have them hand-write code for quite a while. And I think we agree more than we disagree; teaching kids that they can code and how to think algorithmicly are far more important than getting them ready to

That's helpful. I agree that engaging content works no matter your aptitude. And I now see that you're saying that teacher "touch" time was 20 hours. Which seems doable if they're able to teach themselves with prope

Hey, Christina. Really thought-provoking article! I've been teaching students to code for seventeen years, and your experience dovetails with mine. (Disclosure: I'm also the author of 'Learn Java the Hard Way'.) I must a

On the other hand, at my school we ALREADY have a lot of teacher using Google apps with their students. The clever ones have been able to cobble together something decent using gmail, google drive, calendar, etc. Google Classroom streamline

Well, I didn't even know about mirrors.linode.com. Mine were still the ubuntu default servers. I guess apt-get from one of Linode's mirrors saves bandwidth? Or is it just more polite?

I read the headline as semi-ironic. I actually expected it to be an article about how there is (currently) no such site and how bad the vast majority are (mine excepted, of course).

OpenGL is just for drawing. If you want asset management, you'll probably find it in SDL[0], which is also cross-platform and used heavily by almost everyone that uses OpenGL. [0] https://www.libsdl.org/

Books will really, really help. But targeted practice will also help. For the original question, there's an Anki deck for English idioms with sentences.[0] [0] https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/846593111 Edit:

Are there really people whose ONLY copy of a project is on GitHub? If so, I think they're not doing distributed version control correctly.

Multicast has much more than "significantly narrow uses". When we were studying IPv6 in my network protocols course 20 years ago(!) I remember thinking how useful that would be if widely deployed.

This is an aside, but your comment reminded me to check why I've never even considered using 1Password and happily pay for LastPass. A brief visit to their website later and I remembered: 1Password doesn't have Linux support. It&#

As a Texan, I'm now suddenly glad Tesla didn't build here. I love Tesla more than the average human, but I'm not sure I want to give them a billion-dollar tax break at my expense.
