Did you ever use Lotus Notes? I agree that iTunes is poorly designed but you can't just toss out "worst UX design ever!" without old Lotus Notes users taking exception.

Exactly. A good example would be a set of co-linear points. Even for N=1,000,000 if all the points are at (n,0) on the plane then it's pretty trivial to find the solution.

Yeah, that was a bit awkwardly written. I tried looking up more info on it but got worried the article itself was some kind of meta test to measure human intelligence and decided to just move on...

Many years ago I was asked how to convert a .gif file to a .wav file. I remember taking the time to patiently explain that it just doesn't work that way. Looks like I owe someone an apology.

This is a great writeup on a simple bit of math that violates common sense expectations. Consider you need to go on a 100 mile trip and want to average 100 miles per hour. Conditions are bad and for the first 50 miles you only average 50 m

One movie I've always had a hard time categorizing is Groundhog Day. I went through the 37 plots listed and still don't see a good match. Does achieving enlightenment count as a plot?

From the article: "They also didn't have any protection circuitry on them, but I figured that if my car burst into flames halfway down the track, it would totally be worth it." That's the spirit!

Proud father comment here. Last year my son's school had a DARE essay writing contest. Knowing that I favor legalizing drugs he showed me his submission before turning it in. I should note we had a good conversation about why I thin

The article was so calmly and with such a good description of risk that it actually felt weird to me. Its just so common to get stories so deeply committed to "If it saves just one child's life..." without considering the co

I think you changed the question. Before you go to sleep you know you have a 50% chance of waking up to heads and a 50% chance of waking up to tails twice. When you wake up you haven't learned anything so those probabilities can'

Your reframing of the question changes the problem. Let A be the probability of Heads (1/2) and B be the probability you are asked (1/2) then P(B|A) is 1/3. So the probability the coin came up heads is P(A|B) = P(B|A) * P(A)

In the late 80s I flew from Santiago, Chile to Antofagasta on a quite nice LAN Chile 737. There were about 10 passengers. One of the best flights I've ever been on. I'm not sure what the need was to the government to keep that

That is a well written answer. I knew the material presented but I still found it a fun read. With all the crap that goes around, sometimes it's just nice to see the internet living up to its potential.
