There are lots of American small kitchen appliances that pull more than 1100 watts, including kettles. Most outlet circuits are rated for 15 amps so it's not uncommon for some appliances like toaster ovens or vacuums to use 1800 watts

Agreed--I think the living room 'hub' is DOA in a world of smartphones and tablets. Why would I want to mess around with some clunky 10 foot interface when I can just pull my phone out of my pocket or pick up the tablet on my cof

As a Jeep driver I agree, they're definitely not appropriate for shuttling around most people. If you can find the niche of uber customers who want to go offroad though, maybe you could make a fortune.

I'd love to know what benefits the real name system has been providing users. It seems like it's causing more outrage and problems (i.e. recent Youtube comment redesign) than actual good.

This is a quick IPython notebook I made to parse the list of Oscar nominated films and search various movie streaming services for them. You can view the output of the notebook at the link above, or grab the notebook from my github repo h

Any tips for actually getting a Show HN post on HN? I've posted a few things but been frustrated to see them immediately fall out of the new page with only a couple votes.

Very cool, I like title of the associated book "No Bullshit Guide To Linear Algebra" too. Does anyone know of a nice, short summary of discrete mathematics to go along with this?

I thought folks on HN might be interested in something I built and documented on Adafruit's site, it's a probe thermometer (for monitoring what you cook in the oven) that logs temperature data over wifi to Amazon's DynamoDB s

Are these really performance extensions? They look more like extensions to simplify the creation of common charts like geo, stacked bar graphs, etc. edit: The library looks pretty slick though--I like the fluent interface for describing a

Don't forget there's a god mode face image too: https://www.google.com/search?q=doom+god+mode&source=lnms&tb... I made a similar doom guy visualization long ago to monitor server health that got some laugh

I'm guessing his intention is that you build an app which scales its metrics to values between 0-100 and then construct a URL directly to the image--that way you don't need to worry about mapping the value to the damage inflicted.

The numbers don't seem to be that concerning--1000 people/quarter or let's say 5000 people renouncing per year. Out of 6 million citizens living abroad that's less than 0.1% renouncing their citizenship. Can you really

As annoyed as I am with Reader's demise, you can't really say they gave no warning. Four months heads up, and for the last few weeks daily reminders when you logged in should have gotten the message across.

Should be a fun next couple of weeks as all the Reader replacements get a big spike in traffic and deal with inevitable scaling problems.

I used to think the same thing, but really most SMD soldering isn't that difficult with some practice and a nice fine point soldering iron. Check out Dave Jone's videos at the EEVBlog, he has some great ones on SMD soldering like http://w

On the contrary this has a 400mhz MIPS-based processor with 32MB of RAM that runs a version of Linux--it definitely is a full-fledged computer, just with an Atmel AVR hanging off the serial port.

Very cool board--interesting that it has both an Atmel micro controller and MIPS processor. I guess the AVR gives it full compatibility with arduino code and is just a slave of the CPU. I built a little wireless rice cooker monitor with a

Nice! I was thinking about doing something similar to show all the 'Show HN....' that never make the front page. There's a lot of good stuff that barely gets any views for better or worse.

I remember buying this book as a kid http://www.amazon.com/Qbasic-Games-More-Fred-Sexton/dp/15652... and literally poring over it for hours (before the internet, you had a lot of free time as a kid) to see how to make neat graphic effects
