That reminds me, earlier this month I saw a great PBS Nova episode about Neil Armstrong's life: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/space/first-man-on-moon.html It talked a bit about the X-15 and some crazy si

Agile came about somewhat as a reaction to huge processes like waterfall, RUP, etc. that were espoused by many books, conferences, etc. at the time as the best practice and 'right' way to build software. The point being made here

Why can't this argument be flipped on its side, if 95% of the best programmers are outside the US then why aren't the venture capitalists investing in and building companies outside the US? Surely we should see 95% of their portf

Go to a good hair stylist and get their opinion on what looks best like shaving it off entirely, going for a buzz cut, etc. They work with hair all day and know what looks best with your head shape, baldness, etc.

Have been holding off on upgrading to Yosemite until the dust settles. I find it funny that I'm not even getting nagged at all to upgrade (unlike on iOS where I was getting nagged constantly to upgrade to iOS 8). It's almost lik

Nice, I've been doing a bit with packaging python modules and have found the current lay of the land incredibly confusing. This article helps quite a bit and seems to be the most authoritative guide I've seen on the subject.

I was always so jealous of the kids on Mr. Wizard's World that would get to play with the Heathkit HERO-1 robot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT7nZwxb-DI Sad that the current owners are letting the name & IP la

Awesome estate, but wouldn't it be more fun to buy 70 $1 million homes across the entire globe?

I find HN's infatuation with SR-71 kind of amusing. I think the site should have a logo that's the SR-71 flying over a globe or something similar. If you think about it the Y logo kind of looks like an SR-71... :)

Interesting to see a Cortex-M4 on board, certainly no way it's running Windows. Maybe they have some simple RTOS?

Wow what a bummer--it will definitely be missed. I fondly remember reading great articles about graphics programming and C++ development back in the 90's.

I'm actually going through and setting up KeePass with two factor auth (just using Google's Authenticator app for now, maybe a yubikey in the future) right now and have a similar question. After looking into KeePass and kicking t

In a lot of cases there are multiple CAN or similar buses, like one for engine components, one for accessories, one for emissions (OBD2), etc. There definitely are valid concerns with malicious attacks, but they can be mitigated a bit by s

I just bought an unlocked Moto G and couldn't be happier. It's not the latest and greatest specs but it's good enough for most people. The best thing is getting out of the rat race of carrier subsidized phones. Good riddan

Dumb question, but can you just root these and install a stock Android 5.0 image on them? That's about the only way I'd be interested in this phone unfortunately. Even then a Moto X or even Moto G is probably a better idea.

I'm surprised this issue wasn't caught at Apple. You would think they must have a huge network of Macs and iPhones--surely someone should have noticed the poor WiFi performance.

It almost feels like this was setup to be leaked. Instead of paying $1M to dig up dirt, now they can just pay for a few faux-pologetic PR messages and have even more journalists worried about covering them badly in the future.
