In 1996 I was just starting to "code" web sites, so I found lots to do. That doesn't seem like a long time ago until I remember I was 12 at the time, but I digress. Also, spending all evening on IRC was a common event.

Isn't Notepad pretty much the only editor, online or off, that doesn't have automatic spellcheck? This is pretty ridiculous. In any case, congratulations Fliggo! I hope my drunken insults concerning your failure to launch attributed to this

So you've taken the idea of progressive enhancement and reversed it? Zeldman would be rolling in his grave... if he were dead, anyway. I've always found it easier to go the other way: make a site that works on everything, then just add bell

My Father (another old person ;) attributes this magical ability to a couple other things, too: 1. General personality; he believes most people are either "generally happy" or "generally unhappy" with regard to how they interpret both extre

A lot of people would be a lot happier if they could back off a little bit and see things for how they are rather than how they wish they were. I knew this happiness after coming back from a deployment to Afghanistan. The people there had

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this a bit like reinventing the wheel when PLY is around? http://www.dabeaz.com/ply/ There's another popular library that escapes me, too.

I too am a big Vimperator fan. Plus, it forces practice of the number bar, something that I'm still not awesome at even after all these years.

Through some discussions elsewhere, I'm currently of the opinion that if you spend more than 60% of your "chair time" straight writing code (i.e. "pure work", assuming you are a developer) then you are a productivity god. I spend about 13 h

We have now come full circle. Next week: learn how to cut out Twitter entirely, and just use IRC ! IRC is poised to be "the next Twitter", so get in early and be cool later!

Given a sufficient amount of extrapolation, everything is a waste of good talent. You wasted good talent by writing this comment, as I am now doing in reply to it. In fact, given your list of areas only, everything I have ever done in my li

For "simple [rdms] needs" I would recommend SQLite. For anything more, PostgreSQL. I find MySQL too buggy and it diverts from the SQL standard too often (or doesn't implement enough of it) for my tastes. A properly configured postgre instal

I think Alexander Smith put the "point of love" quite well: "Love is but the discovery of ourselves in others, and the delight in the recognition." You can love a friend in that sense to a point, and that may be enough for many people. Obvi

I don't know jack about Rails, but there is some good general advise here too. I would have liked to see some DB commentary that didn't choose MySQL as a foregone conclusion. I can't think of many instances where I would recommend it in gen

Our backup strategy: Automated iSCSI snapshots made 4 times a day to a datacenter across the country from the actual servers. And we don't even have any user data. When it's this simple, everybody can do it.

It seems really strange at first, but after giving it a few minutes, it's much easier to look at the screen now. I hadn't realized how blinding the "daylight" setting was at night.

I thought the point was to share favorite pizza places, don't chains just add noise? If anybody's favorite pizza place is Pizza Hut or Dominoes, I feel extremely sorry for them.

I don't find this crisis scary at all. Either it gets resolved or it doesn't. There's nothing I can do about it and nobody out there who really understands how this whole global economy thing works, so how about we all just chill the hell

I'm a hacker, designer and sysadmin who happens to be an entrepreneur because I'm unemployable at conventional companies. Having to go to an office at the same time every day is enough to pretty much drive me to kill.

The 17" MBP is very nearly the same price as a Mac Pro, and nothing says you need to buy one of those. You could build an impressive Linux desktop for far less than either of those machines.

Boston is the land of puritans. I can barely get a beer after midnight, never mind buy one at a gas station. I'm surprised we even have a bar on that graph.
