In that case, if you have a widescreen you can have two :vsplit going; on fullscreen there probably won't be enough columns for that. FWIW, my personal preference is having vim full-screen on one of my widescreen monitors which is rotated i

No sane person would use a fullscreen laptop, unless perhaps their ONLY task was programming. Even then, it makes more sense to me to have my vim window take up half the screen and something else relevant, say a browser, take up the other h

That was, without a doubt, the most inefficient, obtrusive, annoying way to display a simple table/spreadsheet I have ever experienced. I was so annoyed by all the crap on the screen that I couldn't bring myself to read the list itself.

I seem to recall most exchanges going thusly: pg: Robert, do you have anything to add? rtm: No. Though he did talk during the interview. In this age of Twitter he's my hero.

I always figured people didn't keep jellyfish because it wasn't popular for whatever reason, not because of technological limitations; that's quite interesting. Jellyfish are more problematic than their chill demeanor suggests.

I think you paint an overly-rosy picture of the usefulness of microblogging. There may be value in the posting of these minor notes -- people in general seem to be narcissistic enough to confirm that -- but I have yet to find much value in

I don't specify the recipients when I send an email to a mailing list. It goes to whoever is subscribed to the list, similar to how twitter messages go to the users who are following the person sending (or how it would go to a "group" in Ya

Look at the Yammer feature list; microblogging isn't marginalizing email, it is pretending to be email. Behind the firewall installation: Yes. Public notes: Mailing list. @replies: Reply. DMs: Standard email. Groups: Mailing l

Personally, I far prefer lxml to BeautifulSoup. The latter is incredibly slow and leaks memory like a sieve unless you manually tear apart object trees. Although, BS is easier to write in many cases. Just don't use it for any heavy work.

I like products that make money because it feels to risky to do otherwise. Places like Digg have almost no hope for making money at this point outside of an acquisition, never mind the crazy amount of dilution all the VC money brought them,

I think this bottleneck is easily (and still amazingly) noticed when storing things in RAM rather than on disk. For instance, immediately after a restart of our production database it can take up to a minute to run certain queries. Give it

Perhaps boring was the wrong word... "stuffy", maybe? Look, I love HN as much as the next guy; it's the only link aggregation / commenting site I visit. And there is indeed a lot of good content here. The site lacks personality and that's p

I fail to see at which point I recommended HN be comprised of "quip after quip". Or you've assumed that there is some sort of all-or-nothing requirement between quips and intelligible comments.

To be fair to them, this place is really boring, can't take a joke to save its life, and is often filled with the same sort of stories... but the major alternatives are so much worse by comparison that it's all worth it. To quote myself fro

If Python were made to look like Ruby, I'd have to find a new language. I don't want to do that. Luckily, this will never actually happen.

You can't really have it both ways, though. Twitter wants to be the next big thing; they want to be mainstream. With that comes marketers and other people who's only intention is to use Twitter to make more money. I've grown to hate Twitt

Twitter also happens to be 95% noise. At least if someone is rambling in a mailing list, I know they're rambling on-topic. The tweet that made me stop opening my Twitter client entirely? "Just saw dog poop in the street."

For as much as I dislike TC in general, I can't help but feel a little sorry for Michael... the man looks like he's aged 20 years since he started TC and I think that "constantly plugged in" thing is a big part of it.
