A true tragedy of the commons. I'm pessimistic that we would be capable of an international ban without rogue states and loopholes. We'll probably end up developing quasi-peacetime technology that could be co-opted for military

I definitely have sympathy and empathy for people in this condition. No employee is immune. Think about whether your job will exist and afford you a comfortable lifestyle in 20 or 30 years. There doesn't appear to be an easy answer.

Any job that pays you enough to live, but not enough to get to a better place in the long run, is a dead end. When technology takes these jobs, lives will be ruined. Many people would be better off finding something new now rather than la

Perhaps to combat drug resistance to human-facing bacteria, we should be promoting resistance in bacteria that infect fungi. Eventually, nature may lead us to the next step in the arms race.

If the fear of being publicly proven wrong or held liable causes people to hedge/water down their advice, maybe this creates a space that allows frauds, charlatans, and confident fools to thrive.

Other (less fair) ways of doing it include requiring a co-signer or allocating some assets as escrow. Although, like healthcare, the problem is probably the cost not the financing.

I've found that the Pimsleur method is very good (at least at the beginning/intermediate levels), but is mostly auditory. I think this leveraged the creator's research on timed reinforcement learning. I imagine something li

Lincoln was in favor of maintaining the status quo in order to keep the country intact. However, the Southern states were planning secession prior to his election. What were the Northern states planning to do to the South? What was the So

For hundreds of years, after every leap in productivity, people have proclaimed the 'end of work'. But that never happens. One theory is that cost of living rises to offset generated wealth (historically, see real estate).

The immune system is so complex, we can't even solve food allergies. We're only scratching the surface, although I am hopeful for the future.

Owning your product (ie. reaping the rewards of your labor) is an enormous motivator. It takes a skillful manager/salesperson to keep people motivated as a company grows and they have less skin in the game.

Someone I know had a father-in-law with brain cancer that destroyed his ability to speak -- but he could still sing. So, that's how he communicated up until the end.

60 years ago we were scaling down from the largest scale military action in human history and in the process of repurposing industrial capacity from military to peacetime.

Bad code is bad code, no matter which language. Languages won't save you from poor design choices. OOP is popular in large enterprise systems because it (purports to) promote encapsulation and abstraction, which allows many teams/

I don't know why you're being downvoted. Ageism is real and depends on where you are. It can be scary if you live in a smaller market.

Many people are choosing where to live based on income/expense differential instead of just income. Talent is choosing not to relocate to high cost of living areas, so many companies are opening up offices in these middle-tier cities.
