I believe that loneliness comes from lacking people that are emotionally invested in you. The strongest bonds and closest relationships people tend to have are family (blood and marriage), which often come with a high cost to sever. The e

What aspect of newer versions of GCC breaks the ABI? Are these things that can't be controlled?

From what I've read in the release notes, Haiku uses GCC version 2 for ABI compatibility reasons. Can anyone elaborate on whether this is the case, or whether modern GCC can be/has been modified for the OS to maintain binary comp

Some people look at societal improvements as byproducts of increased wealth generation. In other words, me getting rich is good for the world, presuming I am not cheating/robbing someone else in the process. Although, apparently that&

I've gotten down voted for this opinion in the past, but US equity broker-dealers have created self-regulatory bodies like FINRA with sensible auditing, rules with teeth, and certification processes simply to avoid being micromanaged b

I'd much rather have some base safety net. As it stands in the US, no amount of capital is sufficient to protect yourself against a lifetime of medical expenses. This is a perverse incentive that injects greed, selfishness, and somet

I'm not advocating for patient ownership of medical records. I'm not in the field, so I don't know whether that makes sense. I do know that profit motives tend to backfire in this industry as everyone tries to get theirs be

Treating medicine as a generic, traditional business has done nothing positive for society. There has been a lack of innovation for fear of breaking things, but things are seeming more broken all the time. Maybe we'll start to see s

It sounds like you have more of a problem with poorly written code than C++. The motto of C++ is to not pay for what you don't use. The rub is using abstractions doesn't absolve you of efficiency and design constraints.

Sirius also has almost all major sports and a decent amount of non-music content. I like having it built into my car vs needing to deal with bluetooth, lag, and the various interruptions that my mobile likes to make.

This seems like many parts of the human body: use it or lose it. I've heard this described as well for sexual function. Supposedly, seniors losing the ability to walk leads to quick decline in health.

If you have children, it seems that many parents make friends with similar ages to their own. Once those groups are baked in, though, it's harder to crack. People seem to be more open to new friends with their first child than last.

It was interesting to read about industry in Gorlitz. It's a quaint town that was divided between Poland (Zgorzelec) and Germany following World War II along the river which became the border. I once visited there in the early 2000s.
