Interesting to see Torvalds' attitude when he wasn't a rock star developer... Linus "my first, and hopefully last flamefest" Torvalds :-)

I don't think they can do rote statements. They have to explain what caused the problem, explain what they are going to do to prevent the issue occuring again and admit that they cocked up. Nothing really very rote about that!

An excellent point... but to be honest, if every company reacted like this when they screwed up it wouldn't actually be a bad thing :-)

Nice turn of logic there. A woman who is surrounded by men all day think of sex with them. Ergo, the writer of this blog post is sexually frustrated.

I fired up Fiddler to see what was going on... but can't see the issue... what am I missing? Fiddler is showing me it's returned text/plain!

I think you are probably reading things in the post that aren't there. She sounds frustrated because they are so focused on IT. Sex really doesn't come into it!

Good point - could be. But again, I think we need to be careful not to say that this is occuring because of their gender. I know of a lot of friends who are actually very good at IT, but who have a broader view of society, art and literatur

Are the issues caused by her gender, or because her co-workers can't see outside the box? I'm not sure this is a gender thing, to be honest.

Since the turn of the century, EMC have purchased something like 80 companies. Almost all of them outside of storage related companies have had issues, or have been dropped. If you are in a company that gets bought by EMC, my suggestion is

Well, that is the end of that company. I was involved in a very successful company that was bought by EMC (infra) and I can assure you that as soon as they bought it they forced out the founders, screwed up the support offering, stymied dev

I really think that if the manager said this, then there would be major ructions. Can you point to what he said exactly? It would be a scandal if this is what he really said.

I tried to look at the ESTA form, but at the point where I read and agreed to the disclaimer, after I clicked on the Next button it wouldn't go any further. Not a good start!

But surely if you have written a unit of code, you should at least know a. What valid input the code should have, b. what output the code should return, and c. What you want he code to do! If you know these things, then wouldn't it be easy

It's not that. I wrote a fairly complex piece of code in, of all things, TSQL, and as the logic was unfortunately in the stored procedures and functions I actually found that the unit tests I did for the more granular functions saved me a l

This is the problem with being arrogant: apart from being unkind, you often miss really good things. Arrogant means never needing to listen. Never needing to listen means not being awesome :-)

Sounds like something that YC couldn't handle as it's not an issue for most of us here... and I guess what really surprises me is that there's really no way of even assisting the poster because we don't know: a. who his ISP is, b. DNS entri
