I get that. It's not just a flash, either; it's usually a highly regular geometric pattern, like a checkerboard or something like [this]( http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/poincare/tess_5_4.gif ).

I absolutely agree with this. There was an incident where I work where an employee (a new hire) set up a cron job to delete his local code tree, re-sync a new copy, then re-build it using a cron job every night. A completely reasonable thin

"Choosing to believe" in the supernatural is the opposite of "theology does not require belief" in the supernatural.

How can you study the properties of something you don't believe exists? Edit: People are downvoting this, but I genuinely want to know how "theology is the study of supernatural things" and "theology does not rely on bel

Holy crap. 125,000RPM for a 5mm disc means the edge is spinning at nearly 9,000mph. On top of that, the g-force would be a = v^2 / r v = 2 * pi * 5mm * 125000/60 s^-1` r = 5mm ...giving 87,000 gees?! I start to

I have no horse in the SVG vs. CSS race, but: Web designers, please, do not think that all the super-annoying gimmicky animations (rippling text inputs, wiggly text, excessively stretch-and-squashing motion) are a positive for user experien

What are these magical alternative routes to space the author speaks of? Outside of the atmosphere, the only way to propel yourself is Newton's laws, and that implies a rocket. In the context of Spacex's more recent successes in i

This theory strikes me as teleological rather than explanatory-- it explains phenomena in terms of their effects rather than their causes. Effects come afterwards, so they can't be the explanation for something that's already happ

Again, not my field of expertise, but worth asking: There's going to be much much more air between two mountains 80km apart than between the surface and 80km altitude. I believe the quantity of air in a column above you at sea level

Those gains would make sense for geostationary satellites, but SpaceX is planning on putting its fleet into LEO, at just a few hundred km. Would you expect the same for that altitude? Also with 4000 satellites, you probably wouldn't ha

That doesn't reduce the number of cells touched, and would make the algorithm more complicated. It would also probably hurt cache locality. Going backwards is also pointless complication, you could just as easily cut into two sections

The results at starbucks really make me think that we should mandate visible calorie counts for food establishments. No need to regulate calories directly, just inform people about what they're eating and let behavior follow.

I do my best to mentally invert the Tesla/Musk hype, and my own affinity for what they do, but: 1) It doesn't seem like Tesla was dishonest about anything. 2) MobilEye seems to be very whiny/wimpy about getting a tiny, indire

It seems a strategic error from a sales perspective. Why call attention to the fact that the car is expensive? They could have pointed out that the car funds the Model 3 without highlighting the high price.
