Is it worth it? As far as I can tell, it's a voluntary initiative by Google which is well meaning. And I question if it really "hurts" anyone. Hiring processes are never perfect but Google seems to do a good job out of anyone

Well said. I thought the memo was well written with poor reasoning as to causation. Though the memo said there were influences outside of biology, it spent no time exploring them.

The physical is different from the mental. Are you saying women are less mentally capable? I can't tell but this is basically exactly why women feel legitimizing this line of discussion is unproductive.

As a woman I can say "women are less inclined to be engineers" is only a skip and hop away from "women are not suited to be engineers. I would say don't even bother with the biological argument because as a woman you lik

It's Google that is voluntarily taking on these policies, no? Wouldn't they know their self-interest better?

My understanding of quota is the higher ups saying "We can't micromanage every aspect of your hiring process, but we see there are about 20% qualified women for these tech jobs. So as long as you generally hit this amount, pick th

The point of these policies isn't to make things look good in a picture but to reduce the effect of existing biases in hiring woman. And to give people a chance after some questionable history. Diversity of thought is an admirable thin

There's plenty of diversity of opinion within a workplace. No one is obligated to listen to it. If it's made this public so as to embarrass their own company, well what can you do. People get fired for dumber reasons.

The question to ask is - do these policies counter balance existing prejudices and biases in tech? As a woman in tech, I say they do. You may disagree but I think this discussion requires a lot of input and studies that analyze this topic.
