This is a false dichotomy. Frege was a mathematician and wrote philosophy attempting to explain what a number was. Questions about which domain this effort ought to be bucketed in don't have an answer.

Not sure this is the strongest argument for philosophy. Philosophy is valuable when it is directed to the inquiry of truth for the sake of discovering truth, not for some immediately practical application. This sort of exercise pushes again
