Admittedly I missed that assumption in cutting to the meat of the article. However, does WordPad or a spreadsheet really need to synthesize styling when the font doesn't have it? I just loaded a font without an italic style into TextEd

Was just quoting the author. But also it appears that Apple disagrees with you, since they seem to have turned off sub pixel AA five years ago in macOS Mojave. See [1]. Indeed when I screen-captured and scaled up the non-western script in t

Text rendering doesn't hate you as much as article implies, AFAICT. 1. "Retina displays really don’t need [subpixel AA]" So eventually that hack will be needed less often. Apple has already disabled subpixel AA on macOS AFAIC

> Since GPUs are good at drawing 3D scenes, and since 3D scenes seem “more complicated” than 2D scenes, it may feel like a natural conclusion that GPUs should handle 2D trivially. They do not. While not trivial, nanovg shows that it can

I liked a much of classic macOS and the software. Maybe it's just childhood nostalgia, and perhaps it's also because I never had to really develop for it. When you installed an app, it usually just went in a folder. Sometimes it w

I'm currently using Lua as an extension language in my app [1]. Users can write their own custom UIs and DSP code. It's great how the Lua interpreter (and LuaJIT) allow you to provide your own memory allocator, so I can preallocat

On the page you linked, I see four lines of boilerplate in a constructor: function Account:new (o) o = o or {} -- create object if user does not provide one setmetatable(o, self) self.__index = self return o

If you're doing a drawing app, then 120fps helps you keep the stroke close to the stylus. Even then it may lag a bit because of a few frames of GPU latency and you have to do predictive stroke points and then adjust your stroke later.

My rui library can render UIs at 120fps, uses similar SDF techniques (though uses a single shader for all rendering): https://github.com/audulus/rui Is their GPUI library open source?

I think the jury is still out on whether rust is good or bad for UI. Once rust UI libraries are more mature we'll get a sense of it. There are some advantages of static typing, even for UI (see SwiftUI for example). I'll grant the

Well, in response, the US govt could (in theory) break up YouTube into YouTube and YouTube India, thus freeing the US version from foreign influence. Perhaps this is another reason why companies shouldn't be allowed to get so big.
