It's not. The reasons that one might use `plumbum` are similar to the reasons that one might use `fabric` instead of just running local/remote shell scripts, i.e. - Ability to leverage the richness of Python to pre/post-process the inputs/o

It's a sad day, the day a hacker refuses to look at something because they'd "have a very hard time getting others to do the same". By that same token we should avoid looking at the likes of Haskell, Erlang, Rust, etc. You are absolutely r

Together with Python e-learning courses this could be a real winner. I say this because back when I tutored compsci students, my most effective method was to use shared (GNU) screen sessions. The pair programming and the ability to see how

When Youtube refers to Vitess as being RPC-based, they are not referring to Sun RPC (callrpc), but rather to the generic design pattern of exposing service calls over the network. In particular, Vitess makes services callable [-] using eith

You can also be the 988th kind person to tweet this. The use of the Tweet count to create the custom "tweet this" message is pretty cool.

Yes, you can compile PyPy to JavaScript. There even used to be a JS backend as part of the RPython translation toolchain, but it got dumped since no-one was interested in working on it [1]. There've been more successful attempts like RPytho

The Link: header has been a part of the HTTP spec since forever. The following example from the HTTP/1.1 spec [1] should look familiar: Link: <http://www.cern.ch/TheBook/chapter2>; rel="Previous" We should be applauding Goo

Skype claim to have already fixed the bug with their release last month on April 14th: http://blogs.skype.com/security/2011/05/security_vulnerabili... Sadly the fix seems to be only for the 5.x series and there's no indication for holdout

Thank you for the compliment — I was going to write an article a few weeks ago, but ended up spending the evening redesigning the blog instead: http://tav.espians.com/new-site-design-for-2011.html Procrastination has its benefits I guess,

Let me get this right. Due to convergent needs, dozens of Fabric users post various ideas to the issue tracker and mailing lists. And over the years, some people hack together personal branches solving some of these issues and, despite the

Whilst forking is always a possibility, I'd rather contribute back to the project and help improve Fabric collectively. The community is made up of really nice guys and it'd be great if we could figure out a way of getting the various ideas

I've also explained this in another comment, but basically, the call to `normpath` in his code takes care of this, e.g. >>> normpath('ExistingDir/../../parentRestrictedDir/passwords') '../parentRestrictedDir/passwords

You've overlooked the critical call in the previous line: def is_secure_path(path): path = posixpath.normpath(path) return not path.startswith(('/', '../')) The call to `normpath` normalises the path, e.g.

I'm writing an https frontend in Go which proxies to App Engine. It increases the bandwidth bill slightly, but means that you can take full advantage of the App Engine APIs. You can see the work in progress here: https://github.com/tav/amp

Adam, nice work on getting Charts on HTTPS! I understand that Google is a large company. But, with Google Maps in particular it seems to be a business decision rather than a technical one. What can we do to help swing a decision in favour o

On a related note, it would be great to have a listing of all the service providers who do have comprehensive support for open APIs over SSL. Here are a few to get the list started: * Bing Maps * Facebook * GitHub

It's not a new trend. App Engine has had issues for a long time. Here's an article I wrote early last year about some of its problems and proposed solutions that the GAE team could use to fix them: * http://www.espians.com/why-app-engine-i
