Also, I want to add, I've seen a .NET developer pick up our stack and be a better Java dev than some of the Java devs that had been around for years.

I call this having "Complimentary" skill sets. If an OO shop, Java vs .NET and Ruby/Python etc. Hire for smart, ambitious, willing candidates that fit in well with the culture. I've seen people switch tech stacks very q

Accidentally pressing anything in Emacs is easily resolved by pressing CTRL-G (cancel buffer command), or CTRL-/ (undo), though.... I agree the LISP thing would be a deal break for a lot of people.

I had a friend who owned a really popular food truck in the LA area. After a couple years he went back to IT work because he could make more with more reasonable hours.

I'm waiting for Emacs to run natively on ChromeOS (or Android) so I can get a Chromebook. (I'm not willing to install Cruton or any of the native Linux hacks on a chromebook).

There is a watered down version of org-mode for VSCode. I still prefer the Emacs variety, though. Especially once you tweak out org-capture and custom templates....

In the context of this conversation, I assume we're talking about a single data store for all of an apps data needs. However, I'd argue in more modern application (newer) that one would design with a couple different data stores.

I think you might be assuming that there's a single dev team using the model/domain to do things with the data. Often, at least in big enterprise dev, there will be other teams doing things: Batch processing teams with their own a

I just took a look. I actually don't mind spending $500 to get something in a little bit better form factor and a much better screen. Something like those Samsung Chromebook Pros are what I'm eying up.

I should preface that I'm officially a "SCREEN" snob. Otherwise, I'd probably just buy a few 2014 11" MacBook Airs and burn through those over time.... But, I'll check out the Inspiron 11.

I've done that as an option (I can do that from my iPad). But I'd really like to be able to be disconnected, do all my writing, have it synced to the cloud. I can't rely on available internet connection (with this portable se

I've made more on paper in growth of equity in my home than any of the startups I've worked at. Granted my first job was at a big tech with options right out of college, which allowed me the down payment on home, but ever since..

I'm interested in responses here. I'd like to get a lightwight laptop, similar to my 11" Mac Book Air. I don't feel like I want to pay Apple prices for a second "travel" machine. I would like to be able to run

I do think it's a good topic for engineers to discuss, though, because you can tell a lot about various peoples backgrounds, etc. on how dogmatic they are one way or the other, or even if they have more pragmatic attitudes on the topic

Wait, so there's say 20 apps someone uses, maybe average $5/each, that's $100 for apps on a device you might pay $800+ for? Doesn't seem that ridiculous....
